Leaking nappies on newborn - help!

My DS is 2 weeks old and we are currently using Huggies newborn nappies but they keep leaking and DS is often all wet up his back and side - so they appear to be leaking from the side of the nappy. The nappies are done up as tight as is comfortable for him. Just changed him again - and myself as he also got me all wet and tried to point his willy downwards and now he has just leaked all down one leg! 3rd change of clothes today.

What are we doing wrong?!

DS is 9lbs.

Have you tried another brand? - some just fit better than others.

It could be worth trying the next size up, even though your DS is below the theoretical weight range -- often when nappies leak it's because you need to go up a size, and the weight ranges are just guidelines that don't take account of individual builds. Or, as meemar said, he may just get on better with another brand.

Actually, is he in newborn size 1 or newborn size 2?

If size 1 (4lb-11lb) then I would definitely try size 2 (7lb-13lb).

We tried Pampers initially and were getting the same problem. But will try the next size up in the Huggies - thanks for the tips

I doubt you are doing anything wrong - both my two regularly leaked in disposables until they were weaned. They were quite different shaped babies too.

I switched to cloth for DD2 when she was about 4 months which solved the problem.

I did find that using Boots own brand (disposable) nappies worked well for us though. I would try some different brands if I were you.

Congratulations on your new baby

Huggies leaked with my DS. Pampers and Tesco's ones were OK though, try a different brand
