Evening everyone,

Just curious to what everyone else does regarding this.

When do your siblings' partners become 'auntie' and 'uncle' to your children? Immediately? After a long-term relationship? Living together? After marriage?

Is there an unwritten rule I'm not aware of? Or is it each to their own?

Thanks all

I didn't. We didn't do the Auntie/Uncle thing, even when referring to siblings.

My niece just calls me and my DP by our first names, 'aunty' and 'uncle' feel like really old fashioned terms to me

My partners nieces and nephews call me Kylie (or worse behind my back if they're anything like their parents- I'm sure). I've been with my partner 15 years but the parents don't like me enough to give me the Auntie label.

All on first name terms here.

Thanks everyone for your replies so far!

We also call our siblings' partners by their first names and with my sister getting married next year and bil having moved in with his gf, I wondered if this was something we should be changing as I called my uncles by marriage 'uncle'

Just first names. We have never done the aunt and uncle thing.

I think it depends what those partners mean to your kids too. I don't call any non blood relatives aunt or uncle apart from one, because I love her more than the sun and moon and its important to me that she's recognised as my family. Even if it makes her feel old :)

We were married before my sister had kids so always called my dh and hers uncle. I don't think there's a rule though, just whatever suits tbh!

We do use aunty and uncle though, didn't realise I was so old fashioned!

I saw my cousin recently and her bros kids use Aunty. I still call my aunts and uncles Aunty and uncle even though I'm middle aged! I don't think it's unusual at all!

I don't use it for close friends though, even though Very close, feels weird. My parents had friends we called Aunty and uncle though.

I referred to the partner's of our sibling's with a title once they were married or had children together.
I suppose it was bestowed on them with some sort of permanent coupling.
I know my sister-in-law (brother-in-law's wife) calls herself by her first name only to our children.
