Car seat abroad 3 year old

We are off for a flight next week, will be gone for 5 days with our 3 year old. He’s a bit heavier than most, at about 17-18 kilos.

We don’t know what to do about a travel car seat. We won’t be hiring a car but will be doing one or two car journeys to/from hotel in taxis. We need something safe, but equally can’t take our huge and heavy one as it’s not too practical.

He’s too little for those cheaper boosters or lightweight ones that turn into backpacks (usually age 4+). We don’t want to drive with nothing in place.

Any recommendations? What have you done with your preschooler when driving abroad? Thanks x

If he's actually under 18kg then one of the cheap Joie seats might work well? The Steadi actually fits quite tall children.
