Anyone’s shy DC come out of their shell in Y1? 🤞

Has anyone else’s DC been very shy in reception but blossomed in Y1? 🤞

My DD (5) is generally a v confident girl but struggles a bit in school. She was happy enough throughout reception year but hasn’t made that many friends and I’ve been told she’s very shy in class (she’s not shy anywhere else!) We’ve just enrolled her in ballet lessons for next term. Anyone have any other tips to help boost her confidence in Y1? TIA.

Yes, only very gradually but was very different by Y2

They have plenty of time, try not to worry

not mine but other kids in my dd’s class transformed from reception to year 2.

My ds3 did not really talk in reception. I took our cat in when they were learning about pets and the teacher said it was the most they ever heard him say! However he became increasingly more confident in subsequent years and now he gets into trouble for chatting at secondary school and is always keen to participate in discussions.

Dc1 isn’t shy but very quiet & introverted. He has just finished yr2 and is a very different child to the quiet one who was in reception. He talks more, plays and is much more relaxed & confident. Beavers really helped mine, sports less so.

Just to update this in case anyone stumbles on this thread. Six weeks into Y1 and my DD (now 6) is like a different kid! So much more confident and seems to have made some lovely friends already. In fact today we’ve just been for a playdate at a new friend’s house, and have a couple more lined up. ❤️ I think she’s loving being one of the ‘big girls’ now that she’s no longer in reception, too. So I’m answering my own question here but yes, they can definitely come out of their shell in Y1. Hooray!
