Should we be worried about our 19mo swiping at us?

It's not all the time. She is generally a very happy and well behaved little girl and exhibits the usual 'toddler behaviour' but does swipe at me and DH when she's frustrated or if we take something away from her that she shouldn't have. Some days it happens more than others. She has very good language for a 19MO and understands when she needs to hand something back or if she's being told something is 'wrong' but doesn't always like this so responds at times with a swipe.

Today I guess it was really hot so she might have been feeling a bit stuffy with the weather.
It happened a few times today when we met with friends and we both responded with a very firm 'No!' but I felt a bit embarrassed about the fact it was happening (even though I know I shouldn't really care what onlookers think when your toddler shows you up!!)

I guess what I'm trying to ask is

  • is this normal ?
  • what are your approaches to dealing with this?
  • will this stop?
  • am I on a pathway to having behaviour problems with my toddler?

It sounds like very normal behaviour. She's still a baby really.

My toddler did this today. She’s done it before but not v. often. I put this down to the heat. I guess I’ll find out if she still does it when it cools down (if it ever cools down!)

my approach on this occasion was to just be very patient about it. I could tell she was just so miserable and fed up, I didn’t think telling her off would get us anywhere.
