Nephew put fingers in babies mouth after going toilet

My 5 year old nephew just went toilet for a number 2 and then came out and was playing with my 5 week old baby and he put his finger in his mouth to see if he was hungry as he's seen me use the back of my finger sometimes. When I asked him if he had washed his hands he admitted he'd forgotten. Google has me worried about E. coli. Would this be a concern? Nephew isn't unwell or anything.

He'll be fine but I wouldn't let a toddler play with a little baby like that. I'd be more careful in the future.

I'm sure he'll be fine..

Most strains of e coli and especially the ones that live in our gut are harmless and don't cause illness.

Of course tell him to be careful next time, but presumably he's washed his hands, and also, how do you think that children with older siblings survive?
@moita a 5 year old is really not a toddler.

@OverTheRubicon he admitted he'd forgotten to wash his hands that's why I'm worried 😣. Yes a 5 year old is a child not a toddler and he's really well behaved and felt bad when admitting he forgot to wash his hands.

It's true these mistakes must be made with children and babies in the same household. I'm a first time mother and everyday something worries me. The Google search on E. coli and babies is bloody scary though.

At some point when your baby is a bit older the chances are they will get their hands in their dirty nappy and stick poo covered fingers in their mouth. Or eat rabbit poo at the park, or eat cat food out a bowl. They’re fairly resilient.
