Piercings

Finding this a real minefield! DD13 is neurodivergent & just comes out with stuff eg not “ Can I have my tongue pierced?” but “ I am going to have my tongue pierced”. She does this with everything from smoking to weed. We try to tell her that it won’t always be a flat no from us & that we want to discuss stuff but equally that she is only 13. She’s saying her friend can pierce her tongue for her & tells everyone that will listen that another friend pierced her ears with a compass during break at school! What is everyone’s stance on piercings?

Piercing a tongue is very different to an ear. Very different.

I had quite a few when I was younger, including tongue. Most when I was 16 and older, apart from ears which I had done earlier. The odds of her friend doing her tongue are slim I would have thought, you can't do it with something from your pencil case. Also, I could be wrong, but i'd be surprised if any reputable piercing place would do anything for her without permission from you.

My DD isn't there yet, but if she wants them in future I'll go on what it is, where it is, and if I feel she has the capability to look after it. 13 is a bit young to keep a lot of piercings clean, not catch them on things etc.

My DD comes out with “can I dye my hair purple” and I’m like nope. It could be a phase, at this age they want everything going don’t they.

Something like a tongue piercing isn’t a light decision, I’d explain that to her and just say we shall revisit it once you’re older x

Ears fine. Anything else, nope wait until you're 16/18.

DD just got two piercings done in each ear and expressed a wish for more, plus nose, lip, eyebrow. She'd be banned from school if she did get them done, so we're saying, wait till you finish Y11.

She also wants lots of tattoos

Teen parenting is so hard! I have this with my 15 yr old dd. Hair has been various shades of pink / red for over a year now. School isn’t bothered and a number of friends have various colours. Now she wants piercings and tattoos, currently just has one hole in each ear, I have agreed to a second lobe piercing this summer and a small nose stud at Xmas. I also gets lots of- me and friend could do home ink tattoos, my friend could pierce my belly button etc etc. Gives me the shudders…

Tell her she can have it done professionally when she's old enough to and the complications a dodgy tongue piercing can cause.
