Toddler suddenly waking early

Hi there! Hoping someone can help me.

My 2.5 year old usually sleeps 7pm-7am with no nap (dropped at 23 months). This has been enough sleep and he usually seems well rested etc. However, for the last 2 weeks he's started waking between 5:30 and 6am every day. I wouldn't mind if he just needed less sleep now but he's absolutely exhausted! By 3/4pm he's super cranky and just ends up crying and tantruming until bed when he's asleep in seconds.

I've tried moving bedtime back half hour and having him asleep by 6:30pm but he's still up super early and still exhausted. The tiredness just seems to be building and he's more and more exhausted each day.

I considered an after lunch nap to help but he won't nap unless in a car (I don't drive) and not until around 3/4pm which makes bedtime a nightmare.

I'm not sure what's causing the early wake up or how to fix it/fix the exhaustion. I'm at a complete loss. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you if you managed to get through all that 😳😳

My DD is a similar age, I think it’s the light mornings and not understand it’s not morning yet. We found a grow clock really good, she will say sun is up mummy and if it’s the night we say the sun isn’t up yet and put them back in their cot.
