Floppy larynx experience

Baby been diagnosed with floppy larynx. GP said its very common and 80% of babies grow out of it. They only really worry if baby has long pauses of breath, don't gain weight and turn blue.

The noise my baby makes is a EEE sound when breathing in. It's quite scary. Doing it after feeds mostly and at night in bed. It isn't constant but quite a lot. Should I worry? I KNOW the GP said nothing to worry about right now but I also dont really trust my GP knows much about babies (always seem a bit clueless when I've rang and asked a Q)

Anyone have babies with this? Did they grow out of it? When should I worry -turning blue seems extreme!

I'm assuming you mean laryngomalacia if so yes my 6 year old has it .

He was diagnosed at 6 months old after being in hospital for breathing and coughing issues and was seen regularly by respiratory clinic until 3.5 years old.

Yea kids do grow out of it, he is 6 now but still makes a noise sleeping or when he has a cold

What your looking for is failure to thrive

If it's bad when the child inhales it can take a lot of effort so they can sometimes not put on weight etc so it's classed as failing to thrive

Personally I would ask for a referral to your local kids hospital respiratory clinic to keep a eye on it anyway. Some kids do end up needing treatment.

My son had it (diagnosed at 6 weeks) and grew out of it with no issues 🙂

My DD had this. Random people always used to comment on how loudly she snored when I took her out in the pram. She didn't have any issues with it and after a while I started finding the sound of her breathing reassuring. She grew out of it maybe around two years old or so..

Your GP is right. In rare and severe cases it can make them have a pause in their breathing but that's really very rare.

Thanks all. I find these comments reasuring. I googled it and as usual the worst things came up and terrified me to death. I'll make sure I keep a close eye on it and the pauses in breathing

Right now his breathing while sleeping is just LOUD and sometimes a little raspy and he makes that EEE noise a bit. He is packing on the pounds at the moment so that's reassuring

Hey. Sorry to hear that. It's scary isn't it.

Baby is 10 months now and honestly... absolutely fine. No issues at all now. He outgrew it by about 5 months with no issues.

How is your little one doing?

@Cluelessfirstimer she is really mild according to the hospital. Sounds like a squeaky dog toy when upset or sometimes when feeding. Mainly when wound up.

we saw ENT and they were so relaxed and confident she’d grow out of it. We only saw them as she was in for RSV so it was during a ward round.

I’ve made the mistake of Dr Google which is mostly terrifying.

so pleased your little one is on the mend xxx

@Cluelessfirstimer did your baby have any spit up problems. My baby is gaining weight but is always spitting up. My washing machine is full with bibs. Fun times

Yep - really bad. Constant spit up. Same as us with the weight gain. He was gaining weight just fine so was never referred or anything. That definitely got better with weaning and time. Just had to feed him very slowly until then.

The amount of washing was ridiculous 😅
