When you move to toddler bed

DD is currently 22 months and I’m due baby number 2 in 2 months just as she turns 2. Baby 2 will be in my room the first 6 months but would you move toddler into another room and toddler bed after those 6 months or buy another cot for baby in another room? DD doesn’t climb out of the cot and still in sleep bag. I would have left it for as long as I can but with baby 2 on the way not sure what to do

any advice would be great

Age 2.5 is plenty old enough to be in a toddler bed. I definitely wouldn't buy a second cot, waste of money at it will only be used a few months.
Any reason why she can't use a sleep sack in a bed?

Do what feels right for your family

That said I'd make moving into a new room super exciting with new decor and a doll with its own toy cot DD can look after.

Buy a single bed.

So is your DD still in your room with you?? It's a bit of a big upheaval for her not only to start sharing you with a sibling but also experience sleeping in her own room - might cause some resentment? If she is still in with you id move her sooner rather than later

My twins are 18 months - 1 is ready for a proper bed - the other not

My boy kept falling off the toddler bed so I had to buy him a floor bed (the one that’s a tipi wooden frame). He’s 3 and still sleeps like a windmill. Just something to consider if your toddler moves a lot while sleeping.

No DD is in her own room at the moment in a cot

I didn’t move my daughter til she was gone 3 😂😂😂 I’m big on ‘if it ain’t broke don’t fix it’. In the end I was finding her a bit heavy to lift in and out. She now sleeps in a toddler bed still with a sleeping bag which works fine.

will your daughter resent the baby taking ‘her’ cot? Some children might feel that way…in which case I’d be included to move her asap so there’s a big break before you need the cot for baby and she no longer sees it as hers.

I used a moses basket then bedside cot to start with and then DD went into a single bed at 2.5 which freed up the cot for DS who was just outgoing the next2me crib.

I would go with a single - skip the toddler bed and then have a rail/pillows/crash pad on the floor whilst she gets used to it. We put the mattress we used for the travel bed (foam one) on the floor and would find LO on the floor some mornings

DD1 is 2.5yr, we just moved DD2 into her own bedroom, at almost 6m. we kept DD1 in her cot (which cost us a fiver on gumtree) and got a second cot for DD2 (which we got for free, on gumtree). If it ain't broke, etc etc. We'll move DD1 into a single bed, which is already in her room, pretty soon, but we wanted to be able to do it at her own pace, not because we needed the cot for DD2.

Ok please don't murder me mn but moved my 18month old to floor bed, put baby gate up as she was toddling by that point and it went great. Honestly had no issues tbh she stayed in bed and has continued to do it (aged 3/4)

Babdoc · 07/08/2022 20:08

DD was only 16 months old when DD2 was born.
I moved DD into a bed when she was 15 months, so she didn’t associate the move with being evicted for the baby’s arrival.
I started her off on a mattress on the floor, so she couldn’t fall out in the night, and put all her teddies and stuffed toys on it. I told her this was a “big girl’s bed”, and she was thrilled! I showed it to her in the afternoon, and could hardly drag her off it to come for dinner, she was so taken with playing on it.

@pitchforksandflamethrowers

What's wrong with floor beds and a stair gate? Is there some MN snobbery about them?

mondaytosunday · 08/08/2022 07:24

Get a single bed and put guard rails in if you have to. My son moved to a bed at 20 months.
I wouldn't bother with another cot or a toddler bed.

KangarooKenny · 08/08/2022 07:41

Mine went in a single bed at 2 years old.

HelloAllll · 08/08/2022 07:49

DD was in a double bed at that age
