Baby crawling in the garden

We have a lovely decent size garden and I love spending time with my little one there. Unfortunately, the grass is full of pine needles as we have a huge pine tree just outside our fence. My ds just started crawling and he wants now to go everywhere. I really don't want him to get scratches everywhere from the pine needles, but I'd also like to let him explore the garden.
Any ideas?

can he wear full length trousers?
put a rug down?

I'd just let him at it. Try some mittens and leather slippers if the pine needles are causing issues. He will work it out. If he is likely to still be crawling during winter months I'd really recommend one of the JoJo Maman waterproof snow suits and bootees.

I'd just put leggings on and let him crawl around...
