Cows milk??

Hi all. My lo is about to turn 1 therefore about to transition to cows milk. He’s been having it in porridge, cereal etc for a while anyway and no issues! I was wondering if I’d be able to offer him the odd drink of it before he turns 1 just to see if he likes it? And takes it as a drink…or am I better waiting till he’s 12 months and doing a straight swap.

tia :)

How long until he is 1? Does he eat well?

Carlichimp · 26/07/2022 11:03

Start trying it once he’s one, he can keep having a little formula after his birthday while he gets used to it, if he needs to.

Depends, is he BF or FF? If BF you don't really need to bother until you want to wean as long as his diet has plenty of dairy in it. If FF I'd just replace bottles with cups and swap the milk whenever your tin of formula runs out.

He’s 1 in 2 weeks. We are flying to Turkey 2 days after his first bday for a holiday so I’d quite like him to be on it fully by then to save me taking formula with me abroad! He’s a great eater I may also add

I transitioned from formula to cows milk over about a week. Mixed cows milk into the formula - just an oz to start off with and then increased the milk ratio over the week until it was all cows milk.

If he eats well then I would just do that now before your holiday so his fully on cows milk before you go.

@Lockdownmummy well what I’ve been doing is giving him small sips of it in his sippy cup. I think tonight I’ll give him a bottle of cows milk before bed and see how he goes 🫣 thank you 🙂

Just be aware the cows milk can taste different in various countries - animal breeds and diets differ. Also the milk can be processed differently.

A joyful discovery over the years with Irish kids -who refused to drink milk in Spain/Portugal/USA/Greece/etc etc.. might be an idea to hold on to the formula just in case.

As your going in holiday I would take formula as kids can be fickle with eating and drinking on holiday. But it’s fine to give a cup of milk now.

Sbena · 26/07/2022 20:04

I've been giving mine a cup of cow's milk every day since a little after 11 months (in addition to the isual feed). Asked a paed friend of mine and she said it was fine.

Sbena · 26/07/2022 20:04

*usual breastfeed (stupid phone keyboard)

CoalCraft · 27/07/2022 11:39

I just did a straight swap with DD. If she noticed that it was different from her usual formula, she certainly didn't mind.
