soother delimma

hiya. just a shot(ish) question. i have 4 month old who is getting more and more soother dependant(my fault...i know).
just wondering is now the best time to try to get her off it, if so what is best approach?
i have 3 year old with bad soother habit and dont want same again and i cant get him off his while baby still has hers!!!

we took dummy of dd this week. she turned 2 on jan 2 so i don't think there is any rush. she only had it at sleep time - perhaps you could limit the use to start with.
we decorated a box and put the dummy in it ans said bye to it as the dummy fairy was going to take it as she was a big girl now.
she cried LOADS the first 2 days and today for the first time she went for a nap without crying.
i wouldn't worry about it yet.

DD2 had a dummy/soother froma week old as she just wouldn't settle. She is 19wks and i am only giving it when she is upset/unsettled. I have been lucky because she has never been bother about when going to sleep.

I would rather give a dummy as i didn't want her sucking her thumb as it is easier to get rid of.

My thinking is as long as she only uses it at home and not all the time IYKWIM.

I also worried about this, but was not brave enough to take it off my 6mo completly. He only has it in his cot for sleeping - it does not come out of there, and i am happy with that, he didn't even seem to notice the lack of one at any other time - might help?

At around 6mths old I limited my DD's soother use to bed/sleep times. We left it in the cot and she never really wanted it at other times 0 if she did I would distract her. At 2.5 she gave it up completely with no problems.

I tried my DS with a dummy but sadly he wasn't interested so I have to find other ways to calm him down!!! LOL

I'd just be firm and distract her as much as possible form teh dummy when she has to leave it behind - come on hurry up we can do some sticking downstairs (whilst quickly hiding the dummy from view under the quilt).

Thanks a mill. I suppose there is no real hurry she is only 4 months!! I will try limiting it to sleep time only...I think its as much of a habit for me as it for her!!
Must try to get DS off his though (3 years) he seems to constantly have it when we are at home but never out of the house!
