Dirty Dancing for 12yo girls ? Okay?

DD and friends having a sleepover. All Y7, nice articulate girls who seem to have ALOT of conversations about sex and pregnancy etc.. Culturally diverse but sheltered backgroundsAt single sex school but usual themes of gay, bi, pan etc. come up in discussion. And also Roe v Wade.
I am trying to think of a film that will engage them but not perpetuate too many stereotypes or focus too much on bodily perfection.
I thought Dirty Dancing has a lead who achieves something (the jump) through practice and determination, stands up for what she thinks is right and has some nice coverage of class issues too. But is also cracking film. This is sadly not so true of eg Pretty Woman which I rewatched recently and thought was really icky.
I also thought that they may not have seen Speed and that prob isn’t as controversial but doesn’t seem too reductive of the roles of girls etc.
Would you mind as a parent if I showed either of these? Thanks for any opinions.

How about Mean Girls?

I loved Dirty Dancing when I was that age, but watching it back as an adult makes me cringe.

Suitcases7 · 13/07/2022 18:15

I loved it when I was that age! The abortion plot line went completely over my head - I don’t even remember wondering what was going on!

I just remember watching it a few years later and going “ohhhh”.

Suitcases7 · 13/07/2022 18:19

Went right over my head at the time but tbf so too did the dodgy sex with 11 or 12yo in Big and the Oedipal element of Back to the Future.

Posted before I read your other comments. Yes same! I watched Big again recently and I completely cringed. When I was a kid, I remember just wishing she’d turn into a child with him as I was rooting for them a couple!

Legally Blonde for sure

Legally Blonde and Clueless are so fantastic.

I also really loved Booksmart if they haven’t seen that yet!

10 things I hate about you, Mean Girls, Clueless and Bring It On were winners for the last sleepover I hosted for that age group.

stuntbubbles · 13/07/2022 18:39

I loved Dirty Dancing and think it went straight over my head at 12. I thought Penny had a bad stomach flu.

43prego · 13/07/2022 18:42

We did a choreography on in around that age...

PandaOrLion · 13/07/2022 18:49

Ladybird? Not sure what rating it is though. I think DIrty dancing is a good shout. I showed my god daughters Breakfast club at that age and it went down well. I’d also vote for clueless. The 90s are VERY in where we are in the midlands.

43prego · 13/07/2022 19:00

Legally blonde !!!!!! I top it.

bloodyunicorns · 13/07/2022 19:11

The illegal abortion scene
The misogyny vibe
The creepy owner
Men had jobs, women were housewives

Mind you, I saw it at 16 and didn't think about any of that stuff. I just loved Patrick Swayze, and the dancing was fab.

bloodyunicorns · 13/07/2022 19:14

At that age dd liked Mean Girls, Pitch Perfect and Legally Blonde...

how about The fault in our stars? Great book, now a film.

Nimo12 · 13/07/2022 19:15

I think the themes are far too adult for 12 year olds. Some great alternatives suggested though by other posters

nancynipper · 13/07/2022 19:41

Angus, thongs & perfect snogging!

Great tween film.

MrsTerryPratchett · 13/07/2022 19:53

Footloose is incredibly goofy

It had domestic violence FFS. And the dance stuff is not more goofy than High School Musical!

Why can't we all watch a mixture? Just like music. DD has everything geographically and in terms of era.

HippoLover · 13/07/2022 20:38

@MrsTerryPratchett

Well I’m not saying High School Musical isn’t also goofy (and terrible).

@UWhatNow

Pitch perfect is more than a decade old now

DorritLittle · 13/07/2022 20:53

To be fair I haven't seen Footloose. I like Dirty Dancing but yeah, it is cheesy. But my kids loved The Goonies, ET, Back to the Future, Ghostbusters, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Breakfast Club. (Did nobody here watch The Wizard of Oz when they were little?)

I suggested Legally Blonde, Wild Child and Clueless (made in the 90s!!) above, as have others. So I am not suggesting OP shows the above 80s films, but I disagree that all the popular films from that decade are goofy. (Whatever goofy is).

As I said though, each to their own. It's your loss if you reject all films made last century!

MrsTerryPratchett · 13/07/2022 20:54

Pitch perfect is more than a decade old now

Still the best trilogy. Since Toy Story threw it away with the fourth film.

Oblomov22 · 13/07/2022 21:00

Just watched DD yet again. Love it. Agree it's not suitable for 12 year olds. Or rather, are all the mums on WhatsApp group. These days it's better to ask before.

RobinHobb · 13/07/2022 21:58

Bend it like beckham?

That's a rather shallow list.

Have they stopped making movies or something?
