Worried about my son's sleep

My older son is 6.5, he's very active, does lots of sports, and is doing extremely well at school academically (top of the class as I'm told by his teacher). No problem with his behaviour in general, perhaps a bit of attitude and could be whiny if doesn't get his way but nothing unusual. I feel that this information is important.

I'm really worried about his sleep. A few years ago he'd go down at around 8.30pm and I thought that was late. After a while that became 9pm, then 9.30 and now he just wouldn't fall asleep before 10. He'll lay there tossing and turning and talking and asking for water/food/toilet/anything else he could think of, but won't sleep until 10pm. He would then wake up anytime between 6 and 7am. In my opinion this is extremely little amount of sleep for such a young child. I'm at my wits end now with this sleep issue.

Any suggestions how to make him fall asleep earlier/wake up later? I'm worried it can affect his health.

Thanks in advance

Does he seem over tired under the day? Is his bedroom as cool as possible?

If he’s happy and healthy on it then it’s ok.
Has he tried reading in bed ?

These days yes of course, normally I wouldn't say it's very cool to be honest. He does complain sometimes that it's a bit hot and always rolls up the sleeves of his pyjamas top and bottoms. Could this have any effect on his sleep? Average temperature in his room is probably 22 degrees

Sorry no he doesn't seem tired during the day, however can fall asleep in the car if we happen to be driving around lunchtime, for example on a weekend. When this nap happens, he then won't fall asleep until 10.30-11pm..

I think this is normal my son is 6.5 years and doesn't fall asleep till 10pm (later on weekends!) but he's up at 7am happy as Larry.
