DD refusing her bottle - worried she'll be dehydrated

DD is 10 months and we've been successfully combi feeding pretty much since birth. But the last couple of days she's been completely refusing her bottle, will still bf from me, but will scream and wiggle away as soon as I try to feed her with a bottle. She's a good eater of solid food so I'm not necessarily worried on that front but with this heat I'm getting really worried that she's not drinking enough. She's not lethargic and still having wet (but not very wet) nappies so the dr isn't worried but I'd like to avoid getting to that point! I'm offering water throughout the day (more than usual due to lack of formula) and have got some watermelon so she can get water that way but does anyone have any advice? Especially as I'm going out tomorrow so she'll be with DH all day and obviously he doesn't have the boob option!!

How long will you be away for tomorrow? Can you give her a really good BF before you go and DH offer her things like diluted fruit juice with her meals?

I bought ice lolly molds and made them with plain water and they were a huge hit!

Lots of high water content foods like cucumber, and perhaps try with a sippy cup rather than bottle or even a straw?

And at 10 months she actually doesn't need formula if you're BFing. She'll be fine Wink

...if you'd read the OP you'd see that tomorrow she'll be away and therefore not able to breastfeed.

I'll be gone all day - probably 8-6/7 I expect so will definitely do a breastfeed before I go and one when I'm home if she's not asleep, but I'm really not sure how much she gets from that. Can you give diluted fruit juice at 10 month? I was trying to avoid anything except water but will suggest DH tries that if it's the only way. She does sip water but I'm not sure it's enough.

I went out and got some high water foods today (cucumber has been suggested a lot but she just spits it out 🤦‍♀️), so she can have watermelon/grapes/pineapple/strawberries. I used to have some lolly moulds but think I chucked them. I actually did try a sippy cup for her milk earlier and she wasn't having it but worth another go.

Yes I'd read it and understood thank you.

BF babies don't need formula at 10 months even if they're away from their DM for several hours.

A FF baby would only need 13.5 floz of formula a day, so the baby will be fine with a BF before she leaves and one when she gets home and other drinks and water rich food in between.

Really don't get stressed about the bottles OP.

If you really want her to have some, could DH try a cup instead?

Chocoqueen · 12/07/2022 20:35

@PritiPatelsMaker thanks, bf is more for comfort now and only at nap/bedtime so it's more that formula is her main drink which is worrying me. But hopefully she'll drink more water if I'm not there and it is only one day. I just can't understand why the sudden change!

Don't stress she's 10 months.

She will be able to take all she needs from what ever feeds she can have from you during the day. By that age I was only feeding morning and night. Remember she controls what she takes. Also in hot weather your breastmilk ups the water content (so make sure you drink lots to stay hydrated)

Offer food and water throughout the day.

Likely she's refusing the bottle because she's ready to drop that particular feed.

PritiPatelsMaker · 12/07/2022 20:41

Please don't underestimate you're BFing. At 10 months she'll definitely be getting more than comfort from your BM.
