Oxybutin for 8yo nighttime wetting

Anyone’s DC been prescribed oxybutin for night-time wetting? DS is 8 and has never been dry at night. We’ve been in touch with the school nursing/continence team, done some bladder volume tests etc and they have suggested DS has a small or over-sensitive (or both) bladder. The oxybutin will apparently relax the bladder and allow it to hold more.

We are also going to try an alarm over the summer holidays (depending on how he gets on) but will be trying this medication first. Any experiences, good or bad, I’d be super interested to read them!

Just realised it’s spelled ‘oxybutynin’ - d’oh!

Not bed wetting, but my son was prescribed it, he just kept needing to wee very frequently during the day. It worked a treat. No side effects at all. He had what the doctor described as an 'overactive bladder', she said basically any time there was any wee at all in there it would twitch and make him need the loo. The medication kind of relaxed it. He was only on it for about 6 months, then prob had about 6 months off, needed a few more months on and then been fine since.

Thanks for sharing - I’m so glad it’s worked for your DS! I’ve got to call the GP next week and arrange the prescription (although my GP operate the ‘call repeatedly from 8am and cross your fingers you manage to get through to someone’ system so it’s hard to speak to them).

It was tricky working out what the main issues are with my DS. His wetting is unpredictable - sometimes early, sometimes late, sometimes he wets a lot, sometimes just a small amount - and he sleeps right through it so deep sleep is an issue too. It doesn’t seem to matter what/how much he drinks. And every now and again, he’ll have a dry night (maybe 1-2 times a month). His bladder volume seemed to be about 160ml, which is a bit small, plus he can’t seem to hold it for long - when he needs to go, he needs to go quickly!
