Colic remedies?

Hey all. So my baby is 9 days old, he has awful colic (diagnosed), we have changed his milk to a 'comfort' milk, which is thicker and specifically for babies with colic, and are giving him infacol, it doesn't seem to have helped at all, he's still in a lot of pain/discomfort with it. Does anyone have any tricks or things they have used that seems to have helped? All ideas gratefully welcomed as it's breaking my heart seeing him in so much pain/discomfort :(

Colief and MAM bottles helped with my DD.

9 days is very early for colic though.

Try Dentinox. Can get it from Tesco etc - £2.40 - works a treat.

Also recommend Dentinox but agree that 9 days is extremely young for Colic.

Has he been assessed for Tongue Tie? Do any of those symptoms sound familiar?

Has anyone discussed the possibility of CMPA with you as well?

@PritiPatelsMaker no not been tested for tongue tie, he was diagnosed with colic at the hospital after being admitted for something else

Colic isn't diagnosed as such, it's normally just a term given if they don't know what's causing a baby to cry.
CMPA is cows milk protein allergy. Ime colic this early is probably due to CMPA or tongue tie. It's a lot easier for the NHS to send you away telling you it's colic and leaving you to deal with it yourself though!

I'd you click on the words "tongue Tie" and "CMPA" in my post, I've included links for you. Have a read through and see if any of the symptoms sound familiar.

Also agree that Colic isn't really a diagnosis. The HCPs should be working with you to rule out reasons for the crying.

Colic just means unexplained crying, assumed to be due to digestive discomfort, but it's not really straightforward to tell what causes it. As pp have said, it's not exactly a diagnosis as such. I sympathise as I have been there with my first. Infacol seemed to "work" for a couple of days but in the end we "just" rode it out (it was awful). Doctor was no use, I wanted to know if it was reflux or something. The nights of carrying the baby around the house to stop the awful screaming

It did subside about 10 weeks in, they were the longest weeks of my life. No lasting effects though... and luckily dc2 did not suffer from it.

Do you mean reflux perhaps? Hence the thicker milk? Colic isn't really diagnosed as such and at nine days I would be exploring all the other possibilities first before accepting it's just unexplained crying.

Oh right okay, thank you all, makes a lot of sense to be honest, I'm guna have a look into tongue tie and CMPA and if it seems to me like he has any of them I will speak to the hcp's.

So he only really cries painfully whilst he's pooping, he's not constipated as he poops fine and it's a normal consistency, but he tenses a lot (his tummy) and cries until he's finished pooping

Hi, isn't CMPA only relevant when baby is formula fed? Mine is breastfed so think possibility of CMPA is not existent? Sorry, FTM, not sure of all the terminology.

My baby is 2 weeks old, if too young for colic and it can't be CMPA, then I don't know what it could be

Mine does the same, wakes up screaming in pain and farts/poops then falls back asleep.

A lot of time he's too distressed though so he is properly awake then ( i am tired)

Going to the GP today I can update you OP although my gut feeling tells me I'll be fobbed off with OTC anti colic drops (tried them, didn't work).

They can definitely have CMPA if they're BF. Have a read of what Kellymom says about dairy and BFing

Could it be Tongue tiee*? What symptoms do they have?

Don't know if it's still the case but at a month you can use gripe water. Infacol was useless but the bottle was handy for gripe water.
You could try fennel seeds steeped in boiling water and then diluted, it's supposed to be effective.

Crying in pain with what seems like trapped wind, but passes wind and stools and seems better.

Crying for hours, pulling up legs. Hard stomach, crying worse in the evening. Feeding breastmilk and fine. Has an good appetite.

Google Frida Baby Windi Sticks, I got them posted from abroad 2.5 years ago when I was a sleep deprived hallucinating zombie when my colic/reflux newborn was making me question every decision I’d ever made. They now sell them at boots. The reviews speak for themselves.

The above, a baby carrier, white noise, the love to dream swaddle and a good dummy were my key go to’s, however they didn’t completely solve anything, just improved our situation. My baby screamed for hours and hours from being born pretty much, only time truly helped. He was breastfed and I cut out dairy which made a little difference but not much.

It’s v tough but it does pass, by 12 weeks we felt a lot better.

We're nearly 11 weeks in with a baby with absolutely awful colic. In the first month he screamed almost constantly, he was either asleep, feeding or screaming, we never had a pleasant moment of him being awake and happy! We had multiple doctors appointments and they ruled out reflux and allergies and just told us it takes time. I really sympathise with how hard it is to hear that it takes 3-6 months to get better, I felt at times that I couldn't cope for another 3 hours let alone 3 months.

If I can cope then you can too, I'm not particularly patient and love my sleep (he barely slept because he was in so much discomfort). It started to improve from 8 weeks and now he's definitely not over it but we have good days and bad days and we just have to soak up every minute of the good days! Just take it one day at a time and don't be hard on yourself, cancel plans if you need to, don't feel like you should be loving spending time with your newborn (nobody loves being screamed at!) and try not to worry about any long term impacts, I've been reassured by multiple doctors that my baby is perfectly healthy and this won't impact his future health.

We used Colief drops and Infacol, they take the edge off a little but there is no miracle cure or everyone would use it and no baby would ever have colic. We tried gripe water but he hated the taste and it made him too distressed when we tried to force it down him.

I had a baby with colic and it was awful, I sympathise with you all.

He’s now two and I barely remember it - he’s the loveliest boy.

These worked best for us: dummy, white noise (on iPad or in the day, just hoovering!), baby wearing or swaddling.
