Hi all
does anyone know if this means my little one has an ear infection? Pic below but she has pus/yellow fluid coming out her ear. She has no temperature, she doesn’t appear in pain or unwell, taking feeds as normal etc she’s absolutely fine apart from this fluid coming out. i don’t know whether to book a GP appt, just because baby seems absolutely fine and normal?

Is this an ear infection?

When this happened to my dd it was a burst ear drum. But she was ill. I felt terrible that I hadn't taken her to the doc the day before, but was assured they wouldn't have given her anything then because it hadn't burst then...

Yes looks like it! When the gunk comes out it means the ear drum has perforated and they need antibiotics to avoid infection of the brain.

this is what I was told by urgent care GP when this happened to my DD.

so I would speak to 111 or get a GP appointment!

Was she unwell the past few days? When it gets to this stage and the ear drum has burst, it releases all the pressure and often they suddenly feel a lot better. But I would have expected her to have had some symptoms leading up to that

Yes. As PP said it's due to a perforated ear drum and needs antibiotics. DS has it frequently but often has no other symptoms and the discharge is the first we know about it.

Great thanks everyone. She has been absolutely fine the last few days so its strange! I’ll make a GP appt for tomorrow just to be on the safe side.

no unfortunately this was the start of 2 years of hell with her ears. After this first infection she was on antibiotics every fortnight as the infections kept coming and she was very poorly with them as well until we eventually went private and paid for her to have grommets fit the following February 2023 as we couldn’t get through the NHS - they want to “watch and wait”. The grommets were a success but they only last 6-8 months so they were out by the winter of 2023 and it all started again. At the start of this year we went private again and she had another set of grommets and her adenoids out, she’s been fine until a couple of weeks ago when she got another ear infection but she wasn’t poorly with it, she had antibiotics and she is ok now so i’m hoping thats just a bump in the road and its not all going to start again 😭
