A face bang and pouring nosebleed

My 2.3 yo was stood at his cot bars this evening and sort of face butted them, he does this on occasion when overtired and angry at something. (I’m right there with him and he’s not distressed it’s just when he can’t do something he wants to do like tonight he wanted to have another glass of milk).

This evening he did it, literally just once and he looked up and cried out, we’re in pitch black so I turned the light on and there was blood pouring out everywhere from both nostrils, it was all over both of us and the bed within seconds. The issue is I don’t know whether he hit his head or his nose as it was so dark.

He never cried as such, just moaned, the bleeding stopped in under 5 minutes, I took him downstairs for an hr and he ate, drank milk (so he got it in the end!) and seemed absolutely fine, albeit a bit tired as it was late by then. No marks anywhere on face, he says nothing hurts, when I ask him where he hit he changes his mind every time.

I’m 60% sure he must’ve hit his nose hence the bleed, I didn’t hear a bang like I would’ve if he but his head, but I’m concerned I can’t completely rule out that he hit his head. Would there be other concerning signs if it was a head butt hard enough to cause a bad nose bleed?

I rang 111 and waiting from a call from out of hours gp however just got toddler to sleep and I have no car tonight so I have no idea what I’m going to do if we have to go see someone.

Oh no!hope everything is ok. No advice really... DS used to have horrendous nose bleeds when little.

Did 111 call you back?

I hope your lo is OK, I would of thought there would be a nasty mark / cut on his head / face somewhere if it hadn't been his nose.
Right through my life I have had nose bleeds really easy it only takes a slight knock ( my 2 lb kitten gave me a nose bleed by nutting me trying to get a ear scrtich last week )

I expect he’s probably fine. My DS fell 8ft onto his forehead/nose (when he was 6) and he was bleeding from both nostrils. We took him to A&E because he was very dazed but after a few hours observation he was fine. Fortunately their noses are just cartilage at that age! If you feel concerned though it’s always best to get checked out.

If he'd hit his head hard enough to cause a serious nosebleed, there would have been a mark/cut/bruise and he likely would have been altered (groggy, dazed, potentially nauseated)

He's whacked his nose and made it bleed. I'm sure he'll be absolutely fine 😊

Thank you everyone. Out of hours got back to us 4 hours after I called 111 and asked us to go to a&e, it’s 1am and toddler is fast asleep. Glad they’re being thorough but feels so awful waking him up.
