I have COVID and a brand new baby... Terrified

Hi all.

I tested positive for COVID on Sunday. My partner tested positive the day before. We haven't tested DD (3.5) but she's been unwell with a cough and temperature so we suspect she may have/have had it too. She seems to be on the mend though. DP was only mildly unwell with cold symptoms. Unfortunately I seem to be suffering the most, I have a chesty cough, shivers, and a mild fever.

What is majorly worrying me is that we have a DS who is only 8 days old 😭 I am terrified of him catching it and it making him very poorly because he's so young. He seems fine so far, plenty of wet and dirty nappies and feeding well. I am triple jabbed (had the booster when pregnant) and am breastfeeding.

Did anyone else get COVID with a young baby? I rang my midwife and 111 and they both said just to monitor him.

I am terrified 😭

Sweetheart you've posted every day looking for reassurance. Anything people say won't help you, you need to speak to your GP or midwife for support.

I gave birth last week and was covid positive at the time. The new baby hasn’t had so much as a sniffle - if you’re not too sick I think it’s safe to assume your baby has excellent protection. The hospital staff didn’t show any concern for my baby beyond normal care and didn’t deem it necessary to offer him an extended stay or any extra checks so I think the risks are really low.

Absolutely this. You've done everything you can to protect your baby and kids, even small babies, are not badly affected. I think you do need to speak to your midwife or doctor and explain your anxiety x

I know half a dozen families that have had covid and a newborn. All of them say the newborn has had the least symptoms of them all and been totally fine.

ThickCutSteakChips · 28/06/2022 20:53

I thought I had seen this exact thread already.

I can understand you being really scared, but honestly it will almost definitely be absolutely fine. As the HCPs say, just monitor him.

Hope you are all OK.

rickandmorts · 28/06/2022 21:04

If you had the booster when pregnant and are breastfeeding then baby will have antibodies. He will be absolutely fine x

JuneJubilee · 28/06/2022 21:09

((((HUG)))

TRY not to stress. I hope DH is looking after YOU. Rest as much as you can & get yourself as well as you can.

DS will be fine I'm sure, he has all the advantages!

MGee123 · 28/06/2022 21:21

Calm down, he'll be fine. Most kids are barely affected by it. Our daughter had it at 13 weeks and it was no more than a cold, which she was over in a few days. There is really no need to panic.

carefullycourageous · 28/06/2022 21:22

Totally understand the panic, we had a concerning illness when our youngest was little. You are panicking because you have a tiny baby and your instincts are kicking in.

You are in a temporary situation where you have no choice really but to manage your feelings. It is hard but it can be done. I have sat at the bedside of one of my children when they have been critically ill. All I can tell you is you have to keep breathing and this time will pass.

Write down exactly what symptoms will trigger you to call 111, and then put it on the noticeboard and then choose to focus on something else. I can still clearly remember the magazine articles I read when my baby was ill - the waiting was dreadful but the time ticked by and I could bear it.

Take care.

My baby caught it at 3 months old despite me wearing a mask when breastfeeding etc. He was a bit unsettled for a couple of days, developed a temperature and then a mild cough. He was fine after about day 4.

Im triple jabbed and boosted whilst pregnant, im sure your baby will be fine, just monitor him/her and get some calpol in.

WolfMother326 · 28/06/2022 22:01

My baby caught it from me at 6 months and to be honest he was quite ill, we had to go to the hospital. BUT even in that scenario, which was my nightmare at the time, he was absolutely fine with only very mild treatment. If your baby does become unwell they'll be very carefully looked after. Stay calm, monitor the situation, look after yourself.

Luckyonetwo · 28/06/2022 22:03

My dad had it at 5 days old along with the rest of us. She was totally fine did cough a little and had a stuffy nose bit that’s it. It’s really scary so I know how you feel. I also got told to monitor her but she was/is fine.

Luckyonetwo · 28/06/2022 22:05

Sorry my dd

Oodlesofdoodlescockapoodles · 28/06/2022 22:15

Mine was 7 or 8 weeks old when we all got it, he's exclusively breastfed and still didn't get it. Well, I only tested him once so he might have done but if he did he had no symptoms at all. Try not to worry too much

TBC45678 · 29/06/2022 19:58

My 6 week old caught it and was ok. We called the paramedics because his tummy was sucking in when he was breathing, but they monitored his oxygen and he was fine. Shook it off in a couple of days. The trickiest part was feeding him as he got quite congested, so we found the saline nasal spray very useful, and the doctors told me to just keep feeds short and very regular. He's now 7 months and just had it again, bless him. This time he got a very high fever but again shook it off in a day or two.

It's so horrible to worry about, but try not to stress, even if they do catch it they're much more resilient than you think.
