Huggy Wuggy in hiding

beautyisthefaceisee · 28/06/2022 16:05

Hi all

I've read a few threads on this but given that the posts were entirely "why are you letting your children within 50m of the internet", I thought I'd shed some real light life on this.

Huggy Wuggy is not only on his own videos on youtube and tiktok (please bear in mind that primary school children show each other things) but he is now hiding in plain sight. Something like a peppa pig episode online has Huggy in the middle 5 minutes by very creative, very sick people. Many children fully believe that huggy is a good guy (there are ACTUAL SOFT TOYS OF HIM).

I work in a summer setting for primary school children and believe me, 5 and 6 year olds are very well aware what Huggy Wuggy does (He talks about squeezing you til you die, coming into your bedroom, taking your last breath). And from direct experience, very few of these children had direct access to you tube or anything at home.

Don't be naive, don't be judgemental. Having watched a child draw the creepy thing today, please do not underestimate it.

It’s always been the case that random episodes of children programmes have in appropriate items in the middle of them. A child who is young enough to be watching Peppa Pig is certainly far too young to have unmonitored access to youtube.

Programmes on iplayer, Netflix and other subscriptions services do not have this issue.

Did you read my OP?
@MK19590 maybe because he's causing harm to children in playgrounds?

@TheCanyon please tell me you do not have children in your house.

They are scary looking so I wouldn’t want the toys around my kids but honestly they are cuddly toys, they aren’t going to damage her children anymore than a freaky looking doll.

It’s very real. It’s a computer game: look up poppy playtime. But it’s for adults. Somehow it’s filtered down to kids and there is a cartoon on YouTube

I work with children professionally and like the op children aged 5/6 have shown me their actual teddies or have been very vocal about Huggy Wuggy.

Jericha · 28/06/2022 20:10

It's real, my reception aged child told me they were playing it school. I asked him to explain it and the game they were playing was like "tag" but hugging to catch each other. I wasn't worried then saw an article online. Turns out older siblings had told his friend about it. Once I realised this I probed a bit more and he described Huggy as "big, blue with really sharp teeth". He doesn't know about the other sinister elements.

I let the school know who were really good and on it straight away and kept an eye on their playing which was innocent but I dread to think what it'll be like when he's old enough to accidentally watch this kind of stuff or know how to search for it.

UnimpeachableBravery · 28/06/2022 20:15

Look, if you use YouTube kids you can filter exactly what your kid sees.

Have you actually read it?

HUGGY ENCOURAGES THEM TO HUG EACH OTHER UNTIL THEY DIE. Seeing the cuddly toy, drawing the pictures, only makes it okay!!

I asked a child today what huggy talks about and he said "hug your friends until he breaks your spine".

MN gets hysterical about hee haw so how are we OK about this?! Cause he's got a bloody cute toy?!

So don't let your dc on the international unsupervised.

Even before this latest Huggy Wuggy fad it wasn't safe to just let your children watch random videos on YouTube.

HibbidyHobbidyHoo · 28/06/2022 20:26

Its sickening 😪 😢 😫

Liverpoolhev · 28/06/2022 20:37

Yes unfortunately kids are learning about it from other kids in school now. My 6 year old niece told me about it and said he was in her dream and trying to hug her so she couldn't breathe.

I suppose kids have always got wind of stuff from older kids in the 80s it was Peg Leg and Candyman

No...

but is that going to help them in the playground?

Yes the game and youtube videos may do but a cuddle toy doesn’t.

Fizzgigg · 28/06/2022 20:50

We had to have a word with DS6's teacher about this. One of DS friends was playing Huggy Wuggy games at school, catching people and hugging them 'until you're bleeding and you can't breathe and you die'. DS was pretty creeped out by it. The child then switched to playing Siren head and Cartoon cat and knocking DS over in the playground by jumping on him from behind. DS is good friends with this boy but it was really annoying him.

Teacher had a word with the boys and his mother and all calmed down now.

AmbushedByCake · 28/06/2022 20:55

Bit hysterical. My DS likes to play dinosaurs. Not the nice herbivores, but trex and spinosaurus chomping people. Ban dinosaurs. Kids have always been drawn to weird creepy shit.

See it's funny but my boys are the same - love dinosaurs and the nastier the better. Love playing at dinosaurs eating other dinosaurs.

But this stuff creeped him out more. Something about the way this boy was talking about it just got to him a bit.

Wasn't a massive issue though. DS kept telling him to play something else or play with someone else but when he wouldn't the teacher had to intervene.

ldontWanna · 28/06/2022 21:24

Ok let's split this into two parts.

The actual game, was not made necessarily for children, especially not for young children. Age rating is 13/14. Since it used to be paid for and only accessible on PC, small children can't exactly stumble upon it without a parent's permission. The game is a jump scare/chase game. Huggy wuggy chases you around the room as you try to solve the mystery. If he gets you, yes he eats you and you die,but there's no hugging, whispering, or anything like that. In fact, in chapter 1 he doesn't even have a voice.

Fan made content. This where the issue actually starts. Roblox look alike games, tik toks, youtube videos /songs. Anyone can post something on there, age ratings vary, some users might post their content as not suitable for children, some might not. That's where parental controls and supervision comes into play. Yes there is a song, with all the creepy stuff, but the guy posted under "not suitable for children" . What other people might do with that content, what settings kids have on their devices, what users search for ... that is not under his control.

It would be like posting a song about nanny plum fucking old elf up his arse with her magic wand and using jelly, jelly but not a lot as lube. That doesn't make Ben and Holly inappropriate or evil or lewd or corrupting children. Doesn't make me evil either, just possibly twisted...or drunk. If it goes viral and other adults/teens pick it up and make their own content, I can't help that. It doesn't make them evil either, just because your 6 yo heard it and now fancies some jelly.

These fads come and go, the more the adults make a fuss, the more curios kids become, the more forbidden it becomes, the more searches, gossip, interest and "ohhh aren't we so grown up and cool because we know about it?". If any children are being harmed ,that's because adults react hysterically and with shock/horror instead of having a chat about appropriate games, language etc.

When momo was a thing , there were very few kids that even knew about it ,much less mention it. School(stupidly) sent a letter home and in the next few weeks, a third of the kids were spreading rumours and exaggerated nonsense about it, a third insisted they saw it and reenacted stuff, tried to draw it and a third was fucking terrified and crying. Two more weeks and no one even remembered it, suddenly this internationally spread, horrific ,scary thing just went poof! and disappeared. 🙄

ldontWanna · 28/06/2022 21:48

Comment from the creator of one of the songs.

Hi everyone. I have noticed that there are a few misleading stories and posts that are driving traffic to this video recently. I completely understand your concern but the articles aren’t correct. Huggy Wuggy is and was always a monster in a horror game. If anyone was unfortunately lead to believe otherwise, it is not true. Also I don’t have any part in the game’s or the character’s creation. This is an unofficial song inspired by the character and has never been in the game or part of the official story. The articles that say that this is what “Huggy Wuggy sings” are factually incorrect. This is something I made up inspired by the lore of the game. It is accurate to something he might sing based on his backstory in the game.

Most importantly, I have marked this video “Not for Kids” upon upload and it does not appear in the YouTube Kids app. There is no “bait and switch” in this video to try to mislead kids into thinking they are clicking on a video of a cute character to be surprised by a indie game monster. Huggy Wuggy IS a scary monster from a game I didn’t make and that’s what the song is about. The video solely exists on the general YouTube platform which by default isn’t intended for a very young audience.

There are many videos of Huggy Wuggy on YouTube kids but this isn’t one of them. I personally don’t believe those videos should be there as they actually are being served to kids and include this horror game character but I have no control over what others do. This is the only content I have control over and I have already made sure it’s not on YouTube kids.

Thanks so much for your feedback but there is nothing more that I can do to properly categorize this video. Deleting this video will not change the game, the thousands of other videos or Huggy Wuggy in any way. I hope this adds context to the misleading articles and posts.

bookworm14 · 28/06/2022 21:52

My DD aged 6 talks quite a bit about Huggy Wuggy, having heard about him from kids in her class (this is year 2). I’ve told her he’s from a game for teenagers/grown ups that isn’t suitable for her age. I wish parents would supervise what their very young children watch/play.

This is so incredibly specific I need to know if you did see it in a weird messed up video or just made it up on the spot.
