10 month old fever help?

Hi,

My 10 month old has a fever of 39.5, I've rang 111 and a GP rang me back to tell me to keep doing what I'm doing (calpol, nurofen, plenty of water, stripped to nappy)

He's so lethargic, his eyes are so heavy. He's off his food, we've managed to get something little into him and he's having more bottles than usual. Wet and soiled nappies.

Is there anything else I should be doing? He looks terrible, can't really focus. Just doesn't seem like himself.

He had calpol about half an hour ago and his temp is 38.8

It’s horrible when they are poorly. Sound like you are doing all the right things. Just keep an eye on him and lots of cuddles and don’t hesitate to call the GP or 111 again if you need to/any changes/lack of improvement.

Might be worth having a look at the NICE fever traffic light document. I found it quite useful to know what they are looking for and the levels of concern.

I think lack of drinking is more worrisome than lack of eating.

Tip from my GP that I found helpful was to give their ear lobes a little wiggle to check if it’s an ear problem (big reaction if an ear infection).

Fingers crossed he’ll be feeling better fast!

Ring 111 back and tell them he needs to be seen.

I take it there's no rashes? If ibuprofen and paracetamol don take them temp down then I'd be inclined to ring 101 to ask if he can be seen.
My DD had a urine infection when we couldn't get her temp down, it ended up being kidney reflux but that's a different story. Good luck and don't worry too much they usually bounce back quickly - but always best to check if you've done the usual and it's not working

Thanks everyone. He had a very unsettled night, still has a temperature and just doesn't look right. I'll be phoning 111 again
