Trust, vetting and volunteering

Hi, I'm a mum of two pre-school girls and a writer / researcher on parenting issues. One of the things I'm concerned about is that there seems to be a lot of suspicion about adults (particularly men) who want to help out with children's activities, which means that a lot of these activities can't take place. I'm wondering whether vetting (CRB checking) makes this situation better or worse?
