Toddler tummy ache for 4 hours?

DS is 2 1/2 and started having tummy ache about 3pm. Done 3 normal poos but it's now 3 1/2 hours later and he's still crying a lot saying it hurts. He'll stop if he gets distracted by something like tv or reading a book but then starts up again crying and saying oww. I thought tummy ache only lasted an hour or two? He's never really had one before just been sick once or twice.

We're his poos normal? That is quite a lot of poos.

HSKAT · 17/06/2022 18:33

Yes that's a lot of poo's.
Were they like rabbit droppings?

LP12345 · 17/06/2022 18:44

They were totally normal and nothing more since. Not been sick or anything. I'm wondering if he's just overtired

Is 3 poos a day normal for him?

LP12345 · 17/06/2022 19:00

Usually two. Occasional one or three but not often and he only did them after his stomach ache started. He's gone to bed now cause he's obviously shattered but god knows for how long if he stays so upset!

DD had something similar a couple of weeks ago. Suddenly said her tummy hurt then did 3 poos (normal poos, but she usually only has one). This went on for 8 or 9 days, where she barely ate and occasionally complained of a sore tummy. Gp ordered urine and stool.samples just in case but as he predicted DD was fine again before we even got the results.

It was a virus of some sort, still wonder to this day if it was covid as there were cases at nursery at the time.

Ds 7 never drinks juice just water.. His choice! After 2 small glasses of diluted orange he had such a bad stomach. Normal poo but pains for hours..

Notamorningperson1 · 17/06/2022 19:46

Just to add, your DS' stomachache sounds a bit more intense than my DD's who wasn't really that upset by it.

I suppose another thing to keep an eye on would be appendicitis (my friends DS had it at 3 years old)

It's so difficult at that age as it can be impossible to know if it's just discomfort or actual pain. Triggers for my three year old can be juice or ice cream. Ice cream can cause an awful upset stomach for her. Could he have eaten something strange or even eaten something out in the garden seeing as they are usually outside more often these days.

Thanks so much for all your messages! It's always worrying isnt it even tho I'm sure it'll just be a bug or something he ate. He just woke up and was very sick in his bed so got him all changed and back to sleep. He's exhausted poor thing :( I'll see how he is tonight and tomorrow but hopefully he'll be feeling better.

It's just because it's not something he's had before I suppose. He's woken up and been sick in the night a few times but then fine again. Never had stomach ache all afternoon and then sickness etc. We were out this morning at a foodie place so he ate a few things he wouldn't normally (little bites of things you'd think would be fine but I won't be doing it again!) and cake/ice cream etc. He has a really healthy diet at home and only really drinks milk/water and the odd apple juice so maybe it was just too much for his tummy being so little still.

@LP12345 there are tons of bugs and all sorts doing the rounds at the moment. We had nearly two years of covid and avoided so much of this stuff.

ofwarren · 17/06/2022 21:16

Sounds like it's possibly a virus now he's been sick.
Hopefully it's just a 24 hour thing and he's better in the morning, poor thing.
Well done to you for spotting something wasn't quite right with him.

Thanks @ofwarren it's hard to miss when he's feeling under the weather 😅 it's the only time he's super clingy aha. He's settled down a bit now and seems to be sleeping ok so fingers crossed he gets a good sleep and is better tomorrow. Thanks everyone xx
