8 mo drank from dog bowl...help!

Hello..just looking for some advice really
My 8mo is mobile and curious. Caught her today with lips round rim of dog water bowl. I wiped her mouth and face, gave her some clean water to drink. She seems absolutely fine / has eaten lunch and gone to nap fine.

I feel like a dreadful parent - I was in the same room when it happened but was looking for something in a cupboard and obviously she moves faster than I thought (she was also occupied with a toy when I first turned round). I have baby proofed a lot of the house, but obviously more needs to be done.

Any advice / words of wisdom? I'm worried she may catch something or get ill. Please tell me other babies have done this..

I expect she'll be absolutely fine.
Honestly you will have many many more instances of this happening well into the early years - I've lost count of the amount of times I've told my DC (7 & nearly 4) not to lick the trolley, table, window etc etc.
if you have a dog your baby will come into contact with their germs on a daily basis so don't worry too much.

This made me smile. She'll be fine, OP. Good for the immune system I'm sure!

tothemoonandbackbuses · 10/06/2022 13:43

Yes both mine have drunk out of the dog bowl and shared the heir food with the dog. The dog got and bite, then the child until there was non left
both children are fine

Don't worry. My 9 month old was trying to drink the toilet brush water today. I did stop him in time and washed his hands! But it happens. Small children are gross and more robust than you'd think.

jefficake · 10/06/2022 13:46

oh gosh thank you all. (Obviously I'm a FTM hence the worry). I just don't know how she is always drawn to the things that are not for her...the bin, the dog bowl, the cables...anything but..the toys?! ho hum. Definitely a wine needed tonight (me not her!)

Just wait until she is mobile and you find her in the garden with a worm
In her mouth! Seriously though she will be absolutely fine.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 10/06/2022 13:48

I remember my ds sharing his bottle with my dad's dog 🤢😱😂

Welcome to having a child, where 50% of your time is spend trying to prevent them killing themselves and the other 50% is dealing with tantrums because you prevented them killing themselves.

inappropriateraspberry · 10/06/2022 13:57

She'll be fine. No different from her hands on the floor then in her mouth with a dog walking around.

lljkk · 10/06/2022 14:02

Used to be said that dog's mouths are less germy than human mouths.

User3568975431146 · 10/06/2022 14:05

Extra protein and lumpy bits must taste better 😂 She'll be fine

HopingForMyRainbowBaby · 10/06/2022 14:07

I once drank out of the rabbits water bottle. Didn't do me any harm

MagpiePi · 10/06/2022 14:08

A friend found her toddler eating the cat food with a spoon while the cat was clamped under one arm. Both were fine.

Spudlet · 10/06/2022 14:10

I stopped worrying half so much when I turned around and saw crawling DC gnawing on ddog’s deer antler chew - must have been teething that day 🙈😳

He’s now 6 and absolutely fine 👍❤️

Mariposista · 10/06/2022 14:11

Hahahaha tasty! Be grateful she discuss try the dog’s food too 🤣🐾

FlipFlops4Me · 10/06/2022 14:13

I wouldn't worry. My sister used to steal the Kittycat from the cat's bowl when she was tiny - didn't hurt her. My lad stole dog biscuits and was fine. (So did I when I was small). We're all still around.

PollyDarton1 · 10/06/2022 14:14

She'll be absolutely fine, OP.

One of my friends then 10 month old ate a cat poo from the litter tray and was fine, but that's always rattled around my head when I worried about things like this! Grin

Iheartmysmart · 10/06/2022 14:24

DS was once caught sharing a jar of peanut butter with my mum’s dog using the same spoon. My nephew was rather partial to sharing a Bonio with the dog as well. Although I wasn’t that keen on his habit of dunking a half chewed dog biscuit in the nearest cup of tea!

Both survived to tell the tale with no ill effects.

Lizzieismagic · 10/06/2022 14:29

Meh. Most of mine have eaten dried dcat food at some point!!

gamerchick · 10/06/2022 14:31

I take it up haven't fished mud out of her mouth yet? Toddlers do this, it's good for them. It's one of the reasons that, we as adults can look at something and know how it would taste if we licked it. Toddler memories Grin

relaxationtime · 10/06/2022 14:32

She will be fine.
My son is autistic and he licks puddles, hands down toilet when he gets a chance. Any body of water in fact!

He's rarely ever ill - though obviously stressful for me!

Try not to worry x

Favouritefruits · 10/06/2022 14:36

I just wrote on another thread about children being feral, just another example of perfectly normal behaviour for little ones, she’ll be fine!

jefficake · 10/06/2022 17:09

@gamerchick ph wow that’s a great fact! And makes so much sense…

oh thank you all. Your stories are brilliantly funny AND have reassured me so much.

sounds like I need to buckle in for a few more years of eating and drinking whatever’s within reach….

I gather you have a dog and therefore she's probably already been exposed to everything that's in the dogs bowl. As soon as I caught our dog licking the babies face around 5months I figured there's not much worse and she lived!

Nanalisa60 · 10/06/2022 19:21

I remember coming into the house while my son was visiting with his little girl she was about 2 at the time. My ds and dh husband were watching the football and drinking the special tea in the play tea cups that my dear granddaughter had given them both, I just casually asked were do you think she has got that water from, they both looked up and said the tap, no you twatts she can’t reach, only place she can get water is from the toilet bowel.
