8 week old not smiled yet.

Hi everyone,

I really need some reassurance as my second baby hasn’t smiled yet. He’s 8 weeks old today and was born at 37 + 6 days. He makes good eye contact and makes “ooh and ahh” noises and tries to reach objects above him in his bouncer. When I talk and sing to him when he makes eye contact, he goes try and reach for me with his hands and his eyes widen but still not smiles. Looking back on photos my oldest smiled at 5 weeks and was born at the same gestation. I know all babies develop definitely but I’m worried about the 8 week check and what the GP will say to him not smiling yet.

im also worried about this because he was born very quickly and not breathing for the first 3 minutes and had to be on oxygen for a while after.

Sorry for the awful spelling my iPad autocorrects some words - definitely is differently.

My baby first smiled sometime between 8 weeks and 9 weeks, he was 12 days overdue. He has hardly stopped smiling since :)

If he has just turned 8 weeks then there's nothing to worry about, I'm sure he'll be smiling up at you in no time! Try not to compare with your other child, they really are all different.

Nothing to worry about. DS2 came at 37+5 and smiled around 9 weeks. Just out of the blue 🙂

Did the GP say anything to you at the 8 week check? I have mine on Tuesday and I’m dreading it and hoping he will smile by then as he will be slightly older than 8 weeks.

Hiya. Congratulations on your new baby. I've just looked at when I took the milestone photo of today I smiled. My prem baby was 10 weeks corrected. The GP didn't go through anything like that with me. It was all physical. Enjoy your baby and try not to compare.

DS was about 10 weeks and even then it was at a picture rather than me. He's quite a serious child!

He arrived early so may not smile for 2-3 weeks, try not to worry!

Thanks everyone, it’s sometimes so disheartening to see everybody’s newborns smiling (my friends has just smiled a full faced smile at 4 weeks) so it’s hard not to worry. His eye contact is amazing, just waiting for that smile!

Hi,
my little one will be 8 weeks tomorrow. Still have not had her first smile yet. What happened to yours. GP check in two days. She was born at 37 weeks
thanks

Your baby should smile at around 9 weeks when born at 37 weeks. For now I woilsnt worry about it.

Thanks for your reply. Sorry I couldn’t reply back soon. Still no smile. 9 weeks. Been to see gp for 8 week check. Gp not concerned about smile. Told to give some more time. She is have silent reflux so that could be a reason. Will update here . Thanks

Have you thought about your baby’s eyesight. Can they see your smile?
