Can't wait for him to start crawling!

I never thought I would be in a hurry to have a mobile baby but he has been so close to starting to crawl for weeks now! He started getting up on all fours and rocking back and forth about 4 weeks ago and he has been pushing himself backwards across the room for weeks too but just can't move forwards! I know this is normal for babies.

The reason I'm looking forward to him crawling is that he is getting more and more frustrated at not being able to move. The more he tries to reach for a toy in front of him, the further backwards he moves until he's screeching in frustration!

I know I'll have a whole new set of problems when he gets moving but I'm hopeful I'll have a more content baby, for awhile at least! How long did it take your baby to go from the rocking on all fours and army crawling backwards stage to the crawling forwards stage? He's almost 8 months old by the way.

Mine never did crawl, she either rolled from one side of the room to the other or bottom-shuffled.

Ah very good, I know a lot don't but I think mine will be a crawler because he is working so hard at it! He currently does a combo of rolling and backwards pushing to move but he's not really able to co-ordinate how to get to where he actually wants to go!

Oh I know it’s the worst when they’re frustrated!!! You really feel every emotion along with them don’t you. Gah.

cirillaofcintra · 31/05/2022 16:56

My DD was exactly the same, seemed just about ready to go for weeks. Then a couple of times she shifted her knees forward a bit but didn't go any further. And then about a week ago, my DH and I sat and trailed toys in front of her for a while and she just suddenly got it - she was off. It will happen soon I expect!

DS 7.5 months has been rocking on all 4s and moving backwards since mid April, he's finally cracked going forward since the weekend, (albeit very slowly) but he's much happier now he can go in the direction he wants

However he's also learnt to pull himself up in the meantime,!

linerforlife · 31/05/2022 17:05

Oh god I hated this phase. Can't remember how long the rocking lasted for but as soon as she had cracked crawling she was back to being a lovely baby instead of a whinging misery!!!

AliceW89 · 31/05/2022 17:13

You have my sympathy. Everyone told me to enjoy my immobile baby. Not a chance. 4 months of him screaming with frustration until he finally walked (never crawled). Life and DS became far far easier once he was off.

Oh we're on a similar timeline, I think it was end of April that it started so hopefully in the next week or so!

A few weeks.

Be careful what you wish for. I miss the days when he didn't crawl! I spend my time carrying him from dangerous positions to safety, only for him to shoot back to danger again. Rinse and repeat ALL DAY

Oh I know, as eagar as I am for him to start I completely expect to be saying the same thing when the time comes. 😅

I get you, it’s SO much easier when they’re on the move.

DD2 9mo has been crawling confidently for about a month. Before that there was about a month of the frustrated backwards motion so hopefully you’re nearly there!

Sadly she’s now decided that crawling is no longer enough and so she’s VERY angry that she can’t yet pull up on furniture 🤦🏻‍♀️

magnummy · 31/05/2022 20:21

Could have written this myself 😂

Same age baby, same time since rocking and going backwards. He was getting very frustrated but has recently really started weight shifting with his rolling (leaning to one side, rolling onto his side so reach something etc) and he seems more content since he's mastered that. But he's so frustratingly close to that crawl now. People have been saying "any day now!" for like a month haha.

TangyTangerine · 01/06/2022 12:35

The rocking and backwards crawling stage lasted a few weeks I think. He could actually move quite far by using a combination of lounging himself forward, sitting up and then lounging himself forward again. But sometimes he miscalculated the direction and wouldn't get to the right place, which he found quite frustrating. He's just started crawling (at exactly ten months). Like you I'm relieved. He's so much less frustrated now that he can get to wherever he wants. He's still not very confident or very fast though so it's not that hard to keep an eye on him.
