When could your baby get into sitting position?

DD is 9.5 months and sits confidently when put in that position but can't get there on her own.

How did this progress for everyone else little ones? She does these little mini sit up things when she is lying on her back as if she is trying to sit up but she can't. She commando crawls at the moment, only occasionally pushing onto her knees so I wondered if maybe that is hindering it as I've seen other babies get onto all fours and kind of push themselves back.

Life would be so much easier if she could change positions a bit easier 😊

Really late. I can’t remember the specifics but for both girls they crawled before they could sit independently and I think they walked around the same time the could get into a sitting position. They just didn’t want to be still.

A couple of weeks after learning to crawl, for mine. He also started commando crawling at 9mo, then suddenly started walking back with his hands and sat up!

Every baby is different of course, but if she's just started crawling it shouldn't be too long

Really late for mine. 13 months. She was crawling and pulling up to stand and taking steps before she could sit (but also quite late with most of those things)!

Thanks all. Trouble is she pushes onto her knees then just kind of flops back! Damn wood floors!

4 or 5 months

Mrsmch123 · 02/06/2022 21:49

11 months. Commando crawled for a week then managed to get on to hands and knees. About a week later was able to sit from knees. Now he's fast as anything when crawling🙈it's only been a week🙈

BertieBotts · 02/06/2022 21:52

It was definitely linked to crawling for mine, about 9 months for all of them. They crawled at 8/9 months.

4 or 5 months

Your baby got themselves into a sitting position at four months? When most babies are just starting to roll?

GromblesofGrimbledon · 02/06/2022 22:03

Mine is 8 months and can crawl, pull to stand, and cruise along the furniture. He cannot sit up unless plonked down like that and still sometimes simply flops over from a sitting position and bangs his head 🤦🏼‍♀️

They just do whatever they want in whatever order they want.

SantoPalo · 03/06/2022 07:00

@orwellwasright my baby was able to stay sat up in a seating position when placed upright and was crawling at 5.5 months

BertieBotts · 03/06/2022 11:32

That is not what OP asked for - she is looking for info about when children get themselves into a sitting position.

cottagegardenflower · 03/06/2022 11:45

I think when they could get into the all fours position, though not yet crawl. Got into that position and then flopped back into sitting. Around 6-7 months. He did walk at 9 months though.

girlgonenorth · 03/06/2022 11:51

Mine are older and I can’t remember them ever sitting! Always on their tummies, shuffling and rolling, lost one under the sofa once before I realised they could cover ground! then crawling then cruising, wanting to move all the time. Their cousin sat upright for months and didn’t move at all. There’s just different kinds of baby

purplesequins · 03/06/2022 11:54

dc1 could walk before sitting. walked at 10months

dc3 was a bum-shuffler and could get in/out sitting position around 6 months.

Lilgamesh2 · 03/06/2022 13:16

These baby milestones are so confusing. Mine could roll front to back at 10 days old but now at 8 months still can't roll back to front! She can get from crawling position to sitting up easily but can't crawl forward, only backwards, and can't get from lying down to sitting up.

Mommabear20 · 03/06/2022 13:25

DD could sit herself up at 6 months but didn't crawl till 9 months, DS was crawling at 7 months but couldn't sit himself up till 8 months. Babies all developed at different paces.

luxxlisbon · 03/06/2022 13:56

6/7 months, and then crawling at just gone 7 months.

Same here, mine rolled front to back before 3 months but didn't go back to front until gone 8 months. Then she just did it one day as if she has been doing it all her life..

For both of mine everything seems to happen in jumps. So they don't hit any milestones for months and then suddenly they put everything together and do several of them.

DD started commando crawling before 8 months but couldn't crawl till she was almost a year old. I don't remember when she could sit herself up but it wasn't super early.

Ds started getting himself into sitting position a few weeks ago and then one or two weeks later was able to crawl. I think being able to sit up helped with crawling.

I wouldn't worry about it (though myself I always do). Not at 9.5 months. There is such a big range of when babies do what and it's all normal.

I did find though that now that ds is mobile he seeks much more content. I think he was getting quite frustrated not being able to go where he wanted to.

SNAFU247 · 03/06/2022 21:58

My first did it quite early. My second could do it at 8.5-9 months but couldn't crawl until about 9.5 months.
