Febrile seizures

Hi all,

My one year old had a febrile seizure last month - it lasted about 7 mins and I got such a fright. He has been sent home from creche that day with a temp. Baby was fine and we had 2 weeks of no illness.

Fastforward to last night and despite regular dosing (by weight) of Nurofen and Calpol his temp would not go down. Went into hospital where he had another febrile seizure in there and had a third one 12 hours later. We’re admitted and they’ve done blood tests but no results yet and temp keeps spiking.

They’re talking about an eeg now to outrule epilepsy and I’m just really upset about it all. Has anyone any experience of this? I feel traumatised by it all, as dramatic as that sounds! I hate seeing my baby so unwell too

Hi,
I have posted about febrile seizures just the other day sorry I didn't see your post before. My daughter has had two episodes now and I am the same as you I am so worried it happens again. Bizarrely it looks like my daughters first one was the day after your little ones. Her first one was the 24th of May. This one lasted 7 minutes, the 2nd one was the 28th of this month and this time she was fitting on and off for 50 minutes. It was horrifically scary as you have said... but she is absolutely fine. Happy and loving life again. We have been referred to a seizure clinic this time. We were told she is too young to do the EEG as babies brain activities are all over. I was told she should grow out of it, but it feels like a long time for that to happen.
I don't think I've helped put you at ease so I'm sorry but, there are others out there that this happens to and not one I've heard from have any further problems it's just us poor mums that it affects more!

Thanks so much for your reply and I’m glad to see your little one is ok! It’s so so scary and you feel so helpless. My little boy ended up having another seizure while in hospital so they did an EEG which thankfully was normal. They’ve sent us home with medazolam incase he has another. He did get another high temp 2 weeks later but had no further seizures and hasn’t had any more since then and is his happy self. The seizure team seen us and mentioned medication “Keppra” for 6 months if he kept having them but I haven’t really looked into it yet as I’m not too keen on anti convulsion medication with a normal EEG. I hope that’s the last of them for the both of us!

Ds had one and it was horrendous. The anxiety you feel every time they get I’ll afterwards is bloody awful, until about ten when they should have long outgrown them. I don’t worry anymore and ds is 10.
