Gift ideas for soon to be god child

Not sure where this is meant to be posted. My friend has asked me to be god parent to her son, I really want to get a nice keepsake present for him which isn't a silver bangle. I want it to be symbolic potentially, but something he can make use of that doesn't just gain dust on a shelf etc

Any ideas? Google is showing me stuff for newborns, silver bangles, rattles, spoons and cups. None of that is something

This really means a lot to me, we've been friends since forever and it's a responsibility I am taking very seriously

None of that is something I would want to purchase for him that was meant to say

You would probably need to have the co-operation of a parent- but perhaps a gift of money to be invested in a child savings/investment account/Trust or ISA?

Some people buy a decent bottle of whisky or wine to be opened or sold in adulthood.

Depends how religious they are I suppose. My Grandma bought my oldest a beautiful children's bible that she wrote inside of. She's been gone many years now and ds isn't religious at all as an adult but he's treasures it still.

Any time I attend a Christening (and when I was Godmother) I get a baby bible and write an inscription in it. I got one for my nephew when he was born, and my sister in law, who isn't religious, was really touched by it. Same sister in law got the same one for my first baby a few years later. Its a beautiful and fitting gift for the occasion.

A Grimms rainbow and a bible board book

This looks a lovely one - I agree with PP that it seems a fitting gift for a christening -

The Complete Illustrated Childrens Bible (The Complete Illustrated Children's Bible Library) https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/0736962131/ref=cmswwrcppapiii_Y6EWMFJEZ19Y2JHSFDMH

Thanks everyone, I want to give a physical present, I'll probably stick some money in the card too though.

I like the idea of a bible, as someone who considers themself as religious, but I think this is being done as a tradition as opposed to religious belief as neither parent are religious. So I'm not 100% sure. I will probably pop into the church shop to see if they have a nice little bible though.

What about a different book if not a bible? Like an anthology of traditional tales or a book of children's poetry like AA Milne

Sweetener12 · 23/05/2022 10:27

Really depends on how religious they are. Could be a baby bible or money, maybe ask his parents? Also could be a nice gesture to make a christening reception video slideshow if they are into that.

This is a good idea. There are some beautiful hard back children's anthologies

Thanks everyone, I ended up buying the miniature Usbourne illustrated children's bible, it's beautiful.

I also now have baby's premium bond account details and will make a payment to it.

I am also looking to pick up the book each peach pear plum as a classic and my daughter can gift him that as she has the same.

Gave me some lovely ideas and feel the books have been specially selected and meaningful to our family and I know my friend will know and love that sentiment 😊
