Horrific rash on face at nursery only

sheepandcaravan · 19/05/2022 21:49

Doctor tomorrow but just looking for ideas.

Dd3. No allergies. Four times now has come home from nursery absolutely scarlet on face. First time sent home with slapped cheek, doctor confirmed, then has happened another four times, sent home today as so bad.

Never happened at home. Ever. Same suncream both places. I supply and apply it.

No different food, no rash or redness anywhere except face. Exactly like sunburn, or slapped cheek.

Sometimes also above eyebrows red.

Not unwell, temp fine but cheeks I could cook an egg on. Cool flannel, sudocream and 48 hours she recovers.

We are farmers so she's outside all day, brown hair, medium fair skin.

Any ideas?

No wipes being used, nothing. Staff as stumped as I am!

I wonder if she might be getting dry residue of cleaning stuff on her hands then it’s dissolving on her face if she’s a bit sweaty which would explain why it’s happening on hotter days. Or possibly whatever it is she’s touching is acting as a sun sensitiser? Spectacular rash though I have to say, poor wee thing.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 19/05/2022 23:45

It's probably the sun cream ,stop using it and see if it still happens. Looks like an allergic reaction and the heat is probably making it worse.

Skye85 · 19/05/2022 23:51

Does she have an allergy to the sun if its only on sunny days ? Try giving her a hat to wear.

This is random but I was recently reading an article about a guy who had really bad skin flare ups in work, they eased over lockdown and then flared up again when he went back to the office. Turned out to be one of those air freshener things (you usually find them in toilets) that randomly sprays every few minutes or so and he was allergic to it. Could be something like that potentially!

Was about to say the same! One of those automated fresheners.

Pawtriarchal · 19/05/2022 23:57

Here’s the air freshener story - twitter.com/willhaycardiff/status/1515589006049878019?s=21&t=aMhMDh5jZtHTu63I1eUgUg

Just reading over all the comments and making a list.

Thank you all very much.

Staff same, only the two.

Started about a month ago, two new children have started.

Someone else's cream a good point. As is plants.

Will follow up air freshener and water.

I drive her, ten minutes, seems to start around late morning there.

They thought pineapple as I said but I've ruled it out.

I agree re weather link but can't understand why that doesn't happen at home. Rare we are indoors.

Doctor ten then I'm to go to nursery to update so will take my list!

I will be like so has anyone changed their perfume? Powder? Clothes? Blushjoking obviously.

Not the point of post, but you have a cow with a sun allergy?? Hope your kid is ok, I was also gonna mention the air freshener thing because of a Twitter thread I read recently.

CoffeeMonkey · 20/05/2022 11:33

I would also check plants, I used to have something similar looking happen to me as a child from a plant in the garden (can’t remember what is was, sorry!) & it was really itchy & hot.

hope you can get to the bottom of it!

paranoidmumdroid1 · 20/05/2022 12:06

Does she wear a hat more at nursery? I'm not so diligent at home, but at nursery they make them wear hats and my ds gets much more hot and red faced, and the suncream aggravates it too.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 20/05/2022 17:06

Possibly hand wash as well then touching her face ?

picklemewalnuts · 20/05/2022 17:15

Re pineapple- some people react differently to raw than to canned than to cooked. Are you sure you've eliminated the right one?

sheepandcaravan · 20/05/2022 21:35

Ok so not much further forward.

Fairly in agreement nit allergy as no swelling, pain, itching.

Pineapple yes tried both here again but we do have it just not daily.

Went today after doctors, had a pee, nothing freshener wise, let her play for five, use soap and wipes, fine.

So doctor was worried by multi photos, and confused.

So thinks possible sweat, cream, sun.....

Plan is continue as normal, but nursery to call me next time rather than wait to pick up and I can have access to take her straight down. So they can see it at worst (which is what I tried Tuesday but blocked by reception as in fairness not unwell)

Sometimes cream can 'trap' the heat in the skin. I wear a hat, I can't wear sun cream on my face at all, and I've tried them all, just too sensitive.

GlendaSugarbeanIsJudgingYou · 20/05/2022 21:45

Is there a sandbox?

Thereisnolight · 20/05/2022 21:46

justforthisnow · 19/05/2022 21:55

Happened to my youngest, they were using wipes.

Yup.

comeundone · 20/05/2022 21:56

Our nursery had issues with acidic foods and tots, they often had more than one very rosy child after giving eg tomato-based foods. I can imagine that sunscreen plus sweaty plus prior irritation due to food/wiping faces could cause a fair rash.

sheepandcaravan · 20/05/2022 22:05

Yeah I absolutely agree
.

But why never here?? She's only in two mornings, until after lunch, and yes super active outdoor based but so are we. Like a typical morning, baby on my back, her infront, an hour on quad. She gets off, opens gates, chases sheep.

Back to farm, fills water for pets, scoops feed for cows, hot, sweaty. Home for snack outside as filthy, playtime, races, digging, trampoline.

You get the idea. So she's outside all day, bar 12 - 2 baby nap but nursery same indoor hours. Then I collect her.

Whatwouldscullydo · 20/05/2022 22:09

Sunscreen.

Dd2 ( now 11) was getting a rash when she was in pre school. Turns out they were applying that 8 hrs Sunscreen . The same stuff I avoided with dd1 as she reacted to it as well.

Send her in with sone green people Sunscreen amd ask them not to apply their own.

( if they do)

GindianaJones · 20/05/2022 22:16

Ouch. That does look sore.

If not a reaction to the sun/suncream could it be from eating oranges, kiwi fruit or melon?

My own DC used to get red cheeks like this when it was too hot inside.

Dipsydoodlenoodle · 20/05/2022 23:03

Could it be she hugs a friend and said friend has some sort of lotion on?

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 21/05/2022 00:14

Do the staff apply the children's sun cream? Maybe it's residue from someone else's on the staff's hands.

MarthanotMarfa · 24/05/2022 18:58

I’m sure you’ve thought of this but is it actually not the nursery but something from going to nursery? Specific clothing or the car seat pad? Do you stay at home maybe on the days she doesn’t go.

sheepandcaravan · 24/05/2022 20:59

We head out and about most days, mornings for okays or walks. At Center Parcs now, running about like a wee one, nothing.

Cream on, was catchy today but warm. I'm beginning to think it's something someone is wearing.

sheepandcaravan · 24/05/2022 21:00

Plays, not okays.....

I read this too, it's this article www.mirror.co.uk/news/weird-news/my-skin-red-blotchy-years-26730761

If you can't find what is causing it, perhaps a good HEPA filter in the room might help?
