Horrific rash on face at nursery only

sheepandcaravan · 19/05/2022 21:49

Doctor tomorrow but just looking for ideas.

Dd3. No allergies. Four times now has come home from nursery absolutely scarlet on face. First time sent home with slapped cheek, doctor confirmed, then has happened another four times, sent home today as so bad.

Never happened at home. Ever. Same suncream both places. I supply and apply it.

No different food, no rash or redness anywhere except face. Exactly like sunburn, or slapped cheek.

Sometimes also above eyebrows red.

Not unwell, temp fine but cheeks I could cook an egg on. Cool flannel, sudocream and 48 hours she recovers.

We are farmers so she's outside all day, brown hair, medium fair skin.

Any ideas?

No wipes being used, nothing. Staff as stumped as I am!

If there's no temperature and no feeling unwell I would try not to worry for now and put it down to changes in the weather, perhaps not drinking enough, sweating, too hot, potential pollen allergies that kind of thing.

It's good that piriton calmed it down, try giving a dose each morning before nursery and see if it makes a difference.

KurriKawari · 19/05/2022 22:10

@onlymyselftoanswerto1 my first thought was that story too! So glad he was able to find out the cause and is better now.

leafleaf · 19/05/2022 22:10

Rosacea? Common triggers are exercise and being out in hot or cold weather.

Rosacea I did wonder about but again surely it would happen here here?

Her dad gets hot, he's the one outside and in shorts all year round.

Despite the fact I'm really anxious I don't feel to worried, more interested or keen to ease it.

Piriton can cause drowsiness so if you want to use antihistamine more regularly a more modern liquid antihistamine such as Certizine (Benadryl), might be a good option.

My DS has multiple allergies and he gets something similar but only in parks in Autumn. We’ve never got to the bottom of it, and he’s been tested for pollen and mould spores at the allergy clinic, so it’s a mystery.

I hope you get some answers soon. One thought was paint/arts and crafts stuff? But that would be very random!

Justyouwaitandseeagain · 19/05/2022 22:21

Surely that must be an allergy of some sort. Any sensory stuff they play with? Shaving foam? (Our nursery did this a lot) slime? Play doh? Certain brand of food product different to what you use at home? Cleaning product? I also thought of the automatic air freshener story another poster already mentioned.

chubbachub · 19/05/2022 22:24

Ok hear me out. My niece has this and the GP said she is allergic to the sun.

Here is some more info.
Is the rash itchy or stingy?

@KurriKawari I probably have some of the details wrong but that was the gist of it wasn't it? His face looked so raw and sore, I was happy his work made adjustments once they found out and stopped using whatever it was- poor bloke suffered for ages!

sheepandcaravan · 19/05/2022 22:28

Ok I'm going to check again re air freshener. If they have out a new one in lately that's possible.

The sun allergy I get you, I have a horse with it and a cow! Randomly. But again I feel she's outside so much here, on quad, horse, she would get it here as well?

Apologies for the source!!

Morechocmorechoc · 19/05/2022 22:32

Are there any differences in the staffing on the days she gets it. Or the kids that are in that day? Diary of all events and contact. Looks severe and allergy like to me. Combined with the heat. When did it start. Did something change around that time.

whataloadabullocks · 19/05/2022 22:36

Ooof that looks sore poor wee mite.
It could be if they have a 'puff' air freshener in the toilet, then because it's not 'puffing' all the time, most of the time she misses it, but occasionally the timing is wrong and it puffs when she's in there....kinda grasping at straws I know, but that might be why it's not all the time.

TulipsGarden · 19/05/2022 22:38

Might she be allergic to one staff member's perfume or maybe powder? If she's hugging them?

TulipsGarden · 19/05/2022 22:38

*laundry powder, not maybe

NotintheUK · 19/05/2022 22:47

Or one of the other kids laundry powder, if it's random days. Depending on who is in/who she is playing with.

nannynick · 19/05/2022 22:50

Only on a sunny day. Only at nursery a few hours in the morning.
Gets noticed at nursery, not at home.

How does she get to nursery? I am wondering if this starts earlier, such as being in a car for 5-10 minutes before nursery.

Is nursery a lot of indoor play, with large windows in the room? Lots of air circulation, or a but stuffy atmosphere?

It was warm in Scotland today... I was out walking the dog at 7:30am on the beach and it was really quite warm - Aberdeenshire. No idea what the UV was but I wonder if UV today was high even early on in the day.

swapcicles · 19/05/2022 22:51

Maybe latex allergy, gloves or aprons or even the tablecloths perhaps?

Happycow · 19/05/2022 22:53

The photo does look like a rash - but ive noticed my daughter some home some days with very flushed cheeks and seems to be becuase she is a bit dehydrated. Nursery do offer drinks through the day but if your DD is drinking less at nursery than she does at home that may be causing her to flush?

mynameiscalypso · 19/05/2022 22:55

Could she be allergic to specific plants at nursery if it happens when she's outside? I get random allergies to some types of foliage and it could account for why it happens there but not at home.

nannynick · 19/05/2022 22:58

UV was at 3 before 9am and went up to 6, according to weather data from Ellon. Check your nearest weather station which has UV monitor and see what it was today.

Combination of UV at 3+, lack of fluids, might be it... but then why not happen at home in same circumstances. Maybe more fluids at home.

Marblessolveeverything · 19/05/2022 22:58

It may not be a new product. Allergies can just develop. Eldest had reaction to a staff members perfume took us months to figure it out. Keep a diary to log dates to see can it be pon pinpointed.

HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 19/05/2022 23:01

Is it really really hot 8n the nursery. We went through a several week period when DD was about 18 months old where she was being sent home every day late morning/early afternoon for having a fever. Bright red face, very hot little body. Half an hour after leaving nursery and she was fine and it was because we like temp quite cool at home, they had it about 27degrees in the nursery. Started sending her in lightweight/cool clothing and told them to give her more shade/cool drinks and problem was solved.

Emmelina · 19/05/2022 23:06

A long shot, but of my children can’t wear fleecey pyjamas because when she gets warm it flares her skin up. Could it be something like a fleece/polyester blanket or jumper she rests against that causes a problem when she’s hot? If it’s just her face it does seem most likely it’s a contact thing.

Yes, I was wondering about this. Or pollen from a particular plant there that is therefore more prevalent on a sunny day when they are playing outside at nursery.

DolphinaPD · 19/05/2022 23:32

Could it ve another kids suncream?
