Transition to Toddler bed not going well

I'll preface with saying this is only night 3 so I know it's still early days but just wondering if anyone has any tips/tricks/solidarity to share.

DD was 2 in March. I had no intention of moving her out of her cot but last week out of nowhere she scaled the side and made her great escape - luckily during a nap so I was awake and on hand straight away. So we talked about how at the weekend she would be going into a bed and she seemed keen.

We took one side off her cot Sunday (had to wait to get a baby gate on her door). Normally she sleeps pretty well, even if she woke it would be a quick cuddle and a drink of water and she'd go back to sleep. Now it all seems to have gone to pot. It used to take 10 minutes for her to go to sleep and now she's fighting every minute and it's taking at least an hour, she woke 3 times last night and fought every time too.

It could be coincidental, she has also been very sweaty and has a runny nose the past few nights but seems more likely that she's finding the transition hard.

Any advice? Or any thoughts on how long it might take for her to adjust?

We took our 2 year olds off recently ( 2 beginning May). He climbed the stair gate as well.
He still faffs, and we sit on a chair in his room for up to an hour for him to settle, but he now doesn’t wake screaming as can just walk out of his room and come and find us in our room. So the stair gate off as well was huge help

we added night lights into plug in his room and hallway so he can safely see and walk to us.
