Hi my DS is 4.5 months old. His sleep has been a bit haywire since 3 months old we had a little pattern before then

ive heard the key to getting through this is to get him to self settle but I’m so against cry it out I don’t know what to do? Is there any other way???

it’s annoying when people say “oh isn’t he sleeping through yet” I am trying to help him sleep but I can’t force him to sleep longer if he doesn’t want to

Have you read up on controlled crying? Leave for 6 min, go and calm him. Leave for 8 min, go and calm him etc. Unfortunately the most effective way is to have a bit of crying. You're also at a time when he has a sleep regression and he will also be beginning to form sleep associations, so it's important not to form "bad" associations such as rocking to sleep.

My advice is that the sleep training method you do consistently is the one that will work in the end. It's not quick, it's not easy, but baby and you will both benefit in the long term

My baby didn't ever sleep through until he could roll on his belly. Obviously sleeping on his back wasn't comfortable for him. No amount of sleep training ever helped. The minute he could roll and then roll back, he slept like a log

He’s still very little. Lots of babies aren’t sleeping through at that age.

Id recommend the book The No Cry Sleep Solution- all about how to help babies self-settle without leaving them to cry.

PS controlled crying isn’t recommended before 6 months (and isn’t recommended by me at all).

This.

Controlled crying my back foot. More like ignore your child until they tire themselves out with stress.

I haven't read the book so not endorsing it. I just meant the bit about not recommending controlled crying and certainly not before 6 months.

Also sleep regression at 4 months is normal.

Ok thank you all for your tips I’ve never heard of controlled crying I will look at this for the future

i didn’t want to do anything really rather than stick to our routine and persist. Cuddles when he needs and co sleeping nights when he doesn’t want his cot (safe co sleeping way)

but when a lot of people have asked and even said “my baby slept through by then” I thought am I doing something wrong??

even MIL made a remark the other day “all of my 3 slept through from 4 months” and then said they all spoke and crawled at 5 months. I’m kind of calling bullshit but maybe sleep deprived me just wasn’t in the mood LMAO

Your MIL is talking rubbish. Talking at 5 months, away and shite. It's entirely biologically normal and appropriate for babies of that age not to sleep through.
