How do I get his temperature down? Desperate

MrDense · 12/05/2022 20:20

Lo had not been well and has had temperature since last night, hes vomited twice, hes been sent home from nursery early today because they said he was unwell. I've been giving him paracetamol and ibuprofen syrup, timing it carefully. But his temperature is still high. The ibuprofen takes it down slightly but hes still boiling hot to touch. Are there any tried and tested methods that I can try to make my little boy comfortable. Its honestly heartbreaking watching him in discomfort but not being able to relieve his pain.
Any suggestions would be really appreciated.

I would get in a taxi and go straight to A&E. I took DD when she was 4 with a temperature of 40 and we were sent straight through to a doctor from triage, no waiting at all. You won't be kept waiting long. Hoping your baby is feeling a lot better soon, it's horrible when they're ill Xx

Roastonsun8 · 12/05/2022 21:22

@MrDense 111 is a total waste of time if you have been giving Calpol and it hasn't worked. You need to get your baby seen in A&E I once took DS and his body started jolting its so dangerous OP. Your unaware of how hot your child is becoming not even that the medicine isn't working.

Sending you love. Please see if dh will meet you at hospital. You need to take care too being heavily pregnant xx

Just get a taxi you don't need to take a lot with you. When does your DH finish work? 111 will just say go to a&e don't waste your time

MrDense · 12/05/2022 21:36

Thank you everyone that's commented, seriously they've been really helpful.

@WingingItSince1973 💚. Its occurred to me I'll be in the best place if anything does happen.

Good luck, hope it's not too stressful for you 💐 sending healing thoughts

DressingGownofDoom · 12/05/2022 21:48

Ah this always happens at the worst time!
Until you can get to hospital or if you're still waiting for a callback from 111 make sure you get as much fluid in as possible. Syringe in 10ml every 5 minutes if needs be. Hope he's ok.

TolkiensFallow · 12/05/2022 22:04

Really glad you are going. I hope it’s not too stressful but definitely the right decision.

Morechocmorechoc · 12/05/2022 22:16

Glad you are going as well. We had a serious case when calpol didn't work.

In future though sending your kid to nursery after a night with a temperature is really not the right thing to do. But I'm sure you know that now.

allboysherebutme · 12/05/2022 22:45

Glad you went to A and E. Keep us posted please. X

Kat1953 · 12/05/2022 23:20

Good luck, op, I hope he's better soon

Cornettoninja · 13/05/2022 08:57

I hope you’re both doing ok and have managed to see a doctor Flowers

cdba88 · 13/05/2022 09:58

How is he?

PollyDarton1 · 13/05/2022 10:02

Hope he is OK, @MrDense Flowers

CorsicaDreaming · 13/05/2022 16:05

@MrDense - how is your little one doing now OP? 💐

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 13/05/2022 16:12

It sounds like he'd be triggering a few sepsis red flags. Hope he's okay op.

Ponderingwindow · 13/05/2022 16:13

since you don’t know his actual temperature and he is lethargic, getting him seen is always a good precaution.

I just needed to mention for people reading that while an extremely high temperature is cause for concern, a moderately high temperature is the bodies method of fighting off illness and current advice is not to over medicate. You should follow the advice of your doctor for your child’s specific age and medical condition. Even with my relatively fragile asthmatic child, we were told to be careful not to overreact to a fever.

MrDense · 13/05/2022 19:25

Though I'd update. We saw the doctor and he said it was a viral infection. He said there was some inflammation in his ear and a little in his throat, prescribed antibiotics. LO is doing alot better he has asked for food (been a nightmare getting him to eat anything) and is up and starting to play with his toys. It's been really lovely to see him slowly start to get back to being the lovely boy he is.

I'm a little drained and can feel like I'm coming down with something but I'll be ok just so glad LO is ok.

THANK YOU for all the messages, it's been so comforting having the support! 💚

Also I've purchased 2 new thermometers.👍

Under 6 they cannot control their body temperature properly, so monitor temp closely. Putting a fan on him can help however if his temp gets too high he may fit so put him in a cool bath. Call 111 if you feel it necessary.

AfterGlow87 · 13/05/2022 20:31

I’m glad your baby is ok OP! My baby had a febrile seizure last week and while he’s fine, I’m still traumatised - what was scary is that he had both Calpol and Nurofen. The advised Paralink and PV Nurofen instead of oral so they’re on my list this weekend.

CorsicaDreaming · 13/05/2022 20:44

@MrDense - I'm so glad to hear that 😀
I do hope he continues to improve- I'm sure he will on antibiotics and now he's eating a bit more.

Take care and try and rest and recuperate yourself too if you can 💐

The latest advise is to only put a fan at the other side of the room, not to direct at it at them and never to put them in a cool bath. It can make the fever worse by causing the internal organs to heat up even further.

Cornettoninja · 14/05/2022 06:44

Glad to read your ds is on the mend OP, it’s horrible when they’re ill.

BigYellowElephant · 14/05/2022 06:55

Really surprised with all the 111 suggestions- has anyone called them recently? We waited 13 hours for a call back about a 11 month old a couple of weeks ago who ended up needing hospital treatment. When it was for an adult we never got called back. A&E not much better but 111 are absolutely useless.

Glad youve been seen now OP and your little one is feeling better

Roastonsun8 · 14/05/2022 07:30

@BigYellowElephant I agree I haven't called them recently. But it's not a suitable service 111 anyway for things like a high temp that won't come down at home.
