How do I get his temperature down? Desperate

MrDense · 12/05/2022 20:20

Lo had not been well and has had temperature since last night, hes vomited twice, hes been sent home from nursery early today because they said he was unwell. I've been giving him paracetamol and ibuprofen syrup, timing it carefully. But his temperature is still high. The ibuprofen takes it down slightly but hes still boiling hot to touch. Are there any tried and tested methods that I can try to make my little boy comfortable. Its honestly heartbreaking watching him in discomfort but not being able to relieve his pain.
Any suggestions would be really appreciated.

How old is he, OP? My 3 and a bit year old has just had tonsillitis and had fevers going over 40. They were coming down with Calpol and infant Nurofen but then shooting back up again. After three days I rang the GP and they asked me to come in straight away and they'd create an appointment, because they were worried about him. He needed antibiotics.

I would ring 111. It sounds like you're in a really difficult position, but I'd want him seen especially if he's under 3. Could you get a taxi, or will you partner be home from work soon?

Mummumtum · 12/05/2022 20:58

Get you OH home from work, via somewhere to pick up a thermometer if you can.

PerfectPrepPrincess · 12/05/2022 20:58

I'm sorry buy get your blooming DH back from work to take him to A&E pronto

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 12/05/2022 20:59

A&e!

BurbageBrook · 12/05/2022 20:59

OP, you need to give yourself a shake and realise your priorities here. Your child needs a doctor tonight, most probably, but at least call 111 and let them decide.

Blackbird2020 · 12/05/2022 21:00

The ibuprofen should be working. It’s not.

Call 111. Unmanaged high temperatures can cause comas in babies and toddlers.

TulipsGarden · 12/05/2022 21:00

Yup, raised pulse and drowsiness is exactly why the GP said they needed to see mine straight away. Sorry OP but you can't leave this overnight, especially as fevers tend to get higher at night and you can't stay awake the whole time to keep an eye on him.

lisavanderpumpscloset · 12/05/2022 21:00

Call 111 and get your DH home

CorsicaDreaming · 12/05/2022 21:02

Phone 111 and get advice straight away.

We got told by an old school GP when we were on holiday and our little ones temperature really spiked to use an electric fan. And it was incredible his temperature literally dropped as I measured it with a digital thermometer. He had been at 39 or even 40 because it was a reaction to vaccinations and it came down within a few minutes. Another alternative might be the cold setting on your hairdryer if you don't have a fan. More recent advice is not he's a fan but if you are really worried about his temperature getting too hot and can't get any help it would be a way of killing him. But I really would find my mum one now if I with you and get professional advice

Matchingcollarandcuffs · 12/05/2022 21:02

@MrDense How old is he?

I started reading this thinking you were being OTT but your update (plus lack of concern) is actually quite worryinh. I think you either need to ring 111 or get DH back from work (possibly both)

PollyDarton1 · 12/05/2022 21:02

OK if he's drowsy and not making much sense he sounds ill enough to been seen - now. Not in the morning, not when your DH gets back.

Phone 111 and they'll sort you out a Out of Hours appointment or just get down to A&E if that's easier. You'll be able to manage just fine, if he needs you with him constantly then this is no different.

MrDense · 12/05/2022 21:02

Ok thank you. I think that last few messages have given me a wake up call. I will call 111 and get a taxi.

Thank you

Unregulated high temperatures that don't come down can lead to seizures as their little bodies can't cope.

I'd really tell your DH to come home straight away it's serious - he can help you get in.

Better to be safe then sorry.

The baby can't tell you how he's feeling so you won't know if he's getting worse or not or has other unknown and serious symptoms.

Please get him checked out.

TokyoSushi · 12/05/2022 21:03

Great, that sounds like a good plan, it doesn't sound like it should wait until the morning. Hope he's much better very soon.

CorsicaDreaming · 12/05/2022 21:05

Sorry op. The end of my message is garbled 😳
I was dictating it and my DS talked to me about his computer game and I didn't re read to end of post Blush

MrDense · 12/05/2022 21:06

@Matchingcollarandcuffs seriously 'my lack of concern'. Please do not make comments like this , you do not know me or my circumstances.

If I've come across this way then it's far from it.

TulipsGarden · 12/05/2022 21:06

Thank you OP. I hope he bounces back very quickly.

CorsicaDreaming · 12/05/2022 21:08

I would phone 111 first before getting a taxi. They are v helpful and will give advice over phone - tell you to go to A&E if needed.

FabulousKilljoys · 12/05/2022 21:08

Hope 111 can help, OP. They might send an ambulance out to check him over, I've had that happen a couple of times with mine.

QuestionableMouse · 12/05/2022 21:08

I'd skip 111 and just head to A&E. A friend spent 40mins listening to the hold message while waiting to speak to someone and you might as well spend that time at A&E where you're actually getting closer to being seen.

Hope he's okay- it can be scary how quick they get ill!

Afterfire · 12/05/2022 21:11

Just go straight to a and e.

Do not bother with 111.

FabulousKilljoys · 12/05/2022 21:13

Good point about 111, waited 10 hours for a callback for 10 month old last week, then they cancelled the callback and told us to see the GP in the morning.

I'd go straight to A&E

strrawberriesandcream · 12/05/2022 21:14

Definitely call 111 and prepare for a&e. Just go straight to a&e if there's a long wait on call.

Pack a bag quickly before you go, few ideas

Drinks
Snacks
Wipes
Nappies
Blanket
Spare clothes for baby
Money
Charger
Little bits/toys to keep baby occupied

Whiskeypowers · 12/05/2022 21:20

Straight to a & e don’t piss about with 111
hope he’s ok OP
