CMPA & tummy issues

Hi all. Message from a mum losing her mind!!

My son is 20 weeks old / 14 corrected and has CMPA (Non-IgE). He has been on amino acid milk for 6.5 weeks & was on Aptamil Pepti for 3 weeks before this.

However, he is still in serious discomfort passing gas and really really struggles to poo - to the extent we normally need to use suppositories to get anything out of him. Him trying to poo clearly distressed him so much, it puts him off feeding if he tries to poo during (which he often does).

The GP, allergy doctor & dietician all say it’s because of the damage and inflammation to his bowel so it isn’t working properly. This makes sense but considering it’s been several weeks of no cows milk protein I would have expected some kind of improvement….has anyone experienced similar? How long did it take to see improvement?

We had to use neonate, pepti is still based on cows milk. Some kids do ok, others don't

We are on neocate! Did you have similar tummy issues with your LO?

Sending love it's tough we are dealing with cmpa aswell.

We were on nutramigen for 4 weeks and she was still reacting so they prescribed puramino. Within 3/4 days her rash had gone and about a week or two for her guts to feel better. She didn't really have constipation though she had diarrhoea. We did her milk challenge last week and she reacted within 4 hours so have now been told to stick with puramino and have been referred to a dietician.

I would expect some relief after 6.5 weeks. You know your baby keep pushing. Maybe ask if there's a different milk you could try.

Good luck:)

Was he on cows milk for around 11 weeks ? If so i definitely think his body is still adjusting my daughter was only on cows milk for around 2 weeks and it took around 6 weeks to get her settled on the new milk, it can take a long time for the cows milk proteins to leave their bodies . Hope you lo gets better soon I'd say if he's still the same after another few weeks go back to the doctors he should be passing the milk really easily due to it being completely broken down so I would assume its been from previous milk and will just take some time.

This is SO helpful thank you. Yes he was on cows milk (+ some EBM) for around 11 weeks prior to moving to hydrolysed and AA formulas. Like you said, I would assume it would pass through easily but it’s just like he finds it impossible to poo or pass gas (even though his poo is soft!)

We definitely had bowel issues, but not like this. Are you still breastfeeding? I assume you are dairy and soy free? Might also be something else in the breast milk

AutumnVibes · 12/05/2022 19:37

CMPA here too, but diarrhoea rather than constipation. I am breastfeeding, tried the pepti 1 and it was a night of screaming and I didn’t persist. I have the AA formula but dreading using it as the experience of the EHF was so bad. But when I accidentally have something with milk in (like this weekend when someone made me tea with cows rather than oat milk) it takes about 2 days before the pain and bad nappies pass. So the time frame you’re describing does sound long to me.
I’m wondering if you’re doing exercises with your baby that might help, bicycle legs etc. I just make it up when mine is in discomfort but apparently there are lots online for ideas. You’re probably already doing it but just thought I’d say in case.

@Twins2021 I definitely feel his stomach is still adjusting as long as he can go with a little help I'd wait it out , they can't do anymore re the milk my daughter was on nutramigen which after a quick Google is the same type as the aptimal pepti a hydrolysed formula, the amino acids ones are milk free and made up from amino acids his stomach may well be settling from a few different formulas if he still was reacting to the pepti he may have a severe allergy hopefully he settles in the next few weeks for you and before you know it he'll be on food and water and milk I found it so much easier once they were on food seemed a lot easier on the stomach than the milks.
