Probably a silly question but I'm a first time mum and just wondering what baby rice did you all go on since I'm on SMA formula at the moment but obviously they haven't got a baby food range so what would be best to buy in baby rice?

I never bothered with baby rice. How old is your little one? I bought the Ella's Kitchen purple recipe book and How to Wean Your Baby by Charlotte Stirling Reed. They both have fab plans that are really easy to follow for weaning once baby is 6 months.

Why do you want to give baby rice? Why not just give her proper food?

I never gave baby rice or baby food. You don’t have to give it.

Why do so many people respond on MN like this? Clearly you do not believe in giving baby rice judging by your response. Would it not be kinder to explain that there is basically no nutritional value to baby rice and it is not necessary however it can be used to start baby on their weaning journey, especially if weaning before 6 months.

Baby can try other foods OP but if you wish to try baby rice (your baby, you do what you want) then I think they are all pretty much the same. Doesn't matter what formula your baby is onSmile

@Kszw
My baby loves baby rice. We just used to buy which ever brand was available and then add a scoop of his formula to it before adding hot water

yikesanotherbooboo · 06/05/2022 22:03

Baby rice doesn't taste of anything and doesn't provide any useful nutrients. Give her a bit of something that you are having or if you feel cautious you can fork up an avocado or a steamed carrot or similar.

Moomeh · 06/05/2022 22:52

We only used baby rice to thicken up a puree - for example if I'd blended up a carrot but it was too wet.

I wouldn't put baby rice in formula. Babies can choke if you thicken formula.

If I could do it again I'd introduce solids later. We started doing purees at 6m but my dd really wasn't ready. We kept pushing it but in hindsight we should have waited another couple of months. There's just no hurry.

@Moomeh

Yeah you don't put baby rice in formula.
The instructions on the box say to add some of your usual baby's milk to the baby rice to mix up a paste like texture.

Talk to your HV about weaning , or see if you have any children’s centres near you that do weaning classes.

Baby rice really isn’t a good idea, but there are plenary of really good, easy things to feed your baby x

Thank you to your responses my daughter is 4 months and before you all jump on the band wagon remember shes my baby! I'm not full on weaning her im just letting her taste different things once a day i don't give her loads at all shes still drinking 5-6 bottles of formula through the day but these past few weeks it's like the formula isn't filling her up anymore. Shes hungry 1 hr after her last bottle every time so I'm here trying her on the ella's kitchen 4+ purees. Like I said i don't give her loads unless she wants to take more. Like yesterday she ate a full pouch and then also drank her 6oz bottle as normal shes a greedy baby I'm not going to lie.. @happypineapples thank you happy pineapples every post I've posted on her you always get the judgemental ones I'm used to it haha. and to everybody else the baby rice might not have a taste to it but it might full her up a little more during the day I only want to give it her for breakfast in the morning and thats all! I'm not going to be using it loads just once a day along with the ella's kitchen which she only takes 5 spoon fulls of but she absolutely loves it.
