7 month old weaning

Hi everyone,

I'm feeling a bit frustrated and lost on what to do. My 7 month old has no interest in food, no matter how I try whether that’s spoon feeding or baby led. He just spits it out. My other issue is he’s just not happy anywhere I put him, his high chair is quite big, I’ve tried the bumbo and even sitting on my lap. He’s clearly very hungry as he’s having over 30 oz a day. I’m feeling really deflated and unsure what to do or how to help. I’ve tried a variety of things, porridge, sweet purée, veg purée and fruit and veg for baby led. Any advice or experience would be really appreciated. Thank you

The spitting it out is part of the process. At this stage they are just exploring taste and texture. They do not equate it with hunger. Do you eat together? This allows them to follow your example, as well as taken the attention off them. Put bits and pieces on the high chair tray, or table and let them play with it. Take pieces off your plate and feed directly to them. Give them a spoon to 'feed' themselves whilst you actually feed them with your spoon.
Just keep doing what you are doing.

How long have you been weaning for? Do you eat together and does he show any interest in anything you are eating? Maybe he’s just not ready for solids, I’d just keep offering bits and bobs, a spoonful of something you’re eating here and there, pop a bit of veg on his tray to play with while you’re cooking.

I’m weaning DD2 at the moment (8 months) and she definitely prefers stronger flavours (hated sweet potato purée) and loves homemade curry! So perhaps he’d get the hang of it if he found something really tasty 😊

If you’re worried I’d have a chat with your health visitor and see what they recommend.

Hi OP - As above spitting is part of the process and even them touching and playing with the food is progress. DD always eats better if we sit at the table and eat at the same time rather than total focus on her. I have also found these guys a fantastic resource while weaning and recommend following them on Instagram if you have it

Try not to worry. Give it more time.

Remember - food before 1 is just for fun.

It's all about learning to chew and swallow as well as exploring tastes and textures. Babies main nutrition will come from milk.

My son barely touched solids until he was 12 months. I used to stress myself silly over it.

But looking back now I wish I hadn't worried so much. He slowly starting eating solids and he's 4 now and has a great appetite and variety of foods.

Offer baby some food, if they try it or play with it then great, and if they're not interested just try again another time. It will happen and is a gradual process.
