8 week old sleeping through - should I wake for feeding

Hi all,

Dd is now 8 weeks old and is bottle fed. She is on roughly 180ml every 3-4hours during the day. We are doing on demand feeding and she definitely lets us know when she is hungry and wants a feed.

She was weighed the other day and her weight has only increased slightly from her 7 week weigh-in. I should also mention that she is very long (has been in 3-6m baby grows since 5 weeks because of her length).

She has been sleeping an 8 hourish stretch at night since we was about 4/5 weeks but with her weight leveling off, should I wake her during the night for a feed? This is my first and there is such conflicting advice.

Let her sleep through but see if you can add back the missed feed's amount to th me other feeds? Like increase to 210ml a feed, or squeeze in another feed when baby's awake

KangarooKenny · 30/04/2022 07:25

No, no need to wake her. lucky you !

What's your health visitor's advice?

As a guide, in 24 hours they need about 2.5 ounces of formula for every pound of body weight. It should be easy enough to work out if she’s taking around this amount. But if not, I’d try to up daytime feeds to increase calories, not wake overnight. My DD slept through at the same age but we did a routine not on demand.

@littlebluetrain HV said to give her 120ml every 3 hours and offer another half Oz after if she is still hungry. Problem is that she would always be hungry with that amount with us being at 180ml every 3/4 hours already 🤣. HV didn't seem to grasp that when I said though.

@RandomQuest thanks for that, just worked it out and she is definitely getting more than that at the moment.

No.

I had a similar issue though my DD was mixed fed.

I remember being pissed over the weight and a friend of mine, whose eldest had feeding issues, reminded me while they grow a lot growth isn't linear plus the slight error there is always with weighing things unless you are in a lab.

Just offer her more milk in the day and stop the weekly weigh ins. Go bi-weekly if you still want to go. My DD actually had a growth spurt at nearly 5 months.

I wouldn’t wake her but I would be stricter daytime and feed every 3hrs

rough guide for bottle fed babies is a weight gain of an oz a day so 7oz a week which is just under half a pound

obv some gain more. Some less. What was the weight gain from 7 to 8 w

ThreeWells · 30/04/2022 09:38

@Blondeshavemorefun just checked and she only put on 3oz in the week so I'll up the milk and be more strict through the day.

Thanks all ☺️ has helped a lot

Feed more in the day & have some sleep!

LittleBearPad · 30/04/2022 09:50

Don’t wake her! Just offer her a bit more when she’s hungry in the day time. No need to clock watch.
