4 month old separation anxietie?

My 16 week old is suddenly behaving very differently. Up until now he has been a very easy baby. I'm wondering if it's some strange form of separation anxiety.

We just returned from a trip abroad meeting with my family. Our baby met lots of new people and did not seem phases at all. Lots of smiles and laughs.

When we return and met up with my MIL, who he sees at least twice a week, he started crying uncontrollable when he saw her.

Then today my husband left for work for the first time after our holiday. All smiles and laughs before he left, then when he returned tonight again our baby started crying uncontrollable when he saw my husband. I have only ever seen him so upset when he got his shots.

He met several neighbors in the last two days and did not react at all. So it seems to only happen with people he knows. Anyone have any ideas why this is happening?

It could be, and I can't speak for all babies but we've gone through a few separation anxiety stages and baby is nearly 2 - we're currently going through one now.
