Can you catch chicken pox twice?!

Sho97 · 16/04/2022 19:38

My 1 year old had chicken pox about a month ago and I wouldn't have said it was mild, not overly aggressive, but not mild. He's just gotten over a stomach bug and I've noticed these spots on his legs..

Surely it can't be chicken pox again.. I know it can happen but it's very rare I've heard.
I'm also thinking it could just be a viral rash? I'm going to a pharmacy tomorrow to see what they suggest.

Unfortunately yes you can. My DS caught them when he was 13 months and then when he was 3.

Ponderingwindow · 16/04/2022 19:50

Yes, I had it 3 times. The first two times were mild and weren’t bad enough to give me immunity. The third round was a doozy and I never caught it again.

MamaWeasel · 16/04/2022 19:52

Oh yes, dd has had them twice, once at about 13 months and then again as a toddler

Yes!

AuntieMaggie · 16/04/2022 19:58

Yes - I had it badly as a child and again when my DC had it

Butitsnotfunnyisititsserious · 16/04/2022 20:01

As others have said, definitely. My child's had in really badly 3 times 😩

Daqqe · 16/04/2022 20:02

Yes. DD has had it twice. Apprently if you catch when you are quite young, it’s more common to get it again. DD had just gone 12 months when she first caught it. Was a mild-ish dose. She had it again aged 23 months & much worse 😫

Yours is very close together though. I think that’s probably pretty unlikely! Some viral rashes look really weird.. we’ve fed had some spots I panicked were pox but they turned out not to be!

IhateJan22 · 16/04/2022 20:04

My daughter had it mildly end of Jan, she’s now got it again but much worse. I was surprised you can get it again.

ComDummings · 16/04/2022 20:05

If the first time was mild then you definitely can have it again unfortunately

ShowOfHands · 16/04/2022 20:08

DH gets it every time he's exposed and has been progressively more ill each time. Last time, he only knew it was that as he had meningitis and the lumbar puncture showed it was caused by chicken pox.

TheLoupGarou · 16/04/2022 20:09

Ds had it twice - a mild dose at about 18 months and then was really poorly with it aged 7/8

SonicWomb · 16/04/2022 20:10

You can esp if under one the first time but that doesn’t look like CP to me. Maybe more like viral rash?

museumum · 16/04/2022 20:12

Has he had hand foot and mouth? If not check inside his mouth and soles of feet and between fingers. My ds hf&m was in his legs too and looked a bit like that.

thecurtainsofdestiny · 16/04/2022 20:14

Yes it's possible. Chicken pox spots usually start on the torso. Did it start there?

UnmentionedElephantDildo · 16/04/2022 20:15

It's pretty rare to get it twice but it does happen.

Sometimes just randomly, but an be associated with immune system issues.

Also, I note that your baby is only 1 year old. Babies who are breastfed sometimes rely on maternal antibodies for their response, rather than making their own, and so can get it again

Mummyme87 · 16/04/2022 20:16

Yes. I know plenty of people who have had it more than twice. I also had it twice within 5months when I was 13/14

LondonUnited · 16/04/2022 20:18

Yes, you definitely can (I have!)

That looks like hand foot & mouth though, chicken pox rarely starts on the limbs. Hope he is better soon!

PurpleThursdays · 17/04/2022 11:20

My DS had it twice. Very mild as a 2 year old and then a full on version as a 5 year old.

PurpleThursdays · 17/04/2022 11:21

Pharmacist would be able to tell if it was chicken pox

Chely · 17/04/2022 11:52

Yes but it is rare.
That may just be a viral rash, keep an eye on it.
