how/when to give up the dummy?

In it's wisdom my bounty update says DD should be giving up her dummy sometime about now (3-4months). She really does still rely on it to get to sleep. At what age did your child stop taking a dummy? With Ds he found his thumb at about this age, but DD curls hers up under her fingers.

Neither of mine ever found their thumbs but I got rid of the dummies at about 4 months anyway. I don't think they would have stopped on their own but it wasn't bad at all when I gradually took it away.

How did you do that? [thick emoticon]

Ds is 16mo and still has his dummy. He'll give it up when he's ready and not before.

I dont believe in taking comfort from a child just because some 'expert' says i should.
