Big babies!

Are babies getting bigger these days or is it just me?
I have 2 DS's 4 and 1, both born early.
DS1 at 38+6 weeks weighing 9lb 5oz
DS2 at 37 weeks weighing 8lb 12oz
Both 54cm in length and head circumference of 38cm.

I thought maybe it was just due to DH being 6ft 6 but speaking to other mums at a playgroup today they all found they're babies were quite big too. One said hers was 10lb at 38 weeks.

No gestational diabieties or anything so far as anybody knows.

Has anybody else had a big baby before their due date? Or is there something in the water over here?

Probably. Generally women are healthier and take pregnancy vitamins etc now. I’m 5’4, Ds was 54cm long and 8lb8, born due date

I had my Son in May last year and he was only 6lbs 8oz and tiny!

I'm 5'6 and my Partner is 6'. He did grow quick and he's always been really long/tall but he wasn't big when he was born

Lou98 · 13/04/2022 18:14

Sorry meant to say he was born at 39+1

Our youngest (6th) was 10lb 15oz at 38+6. Our twins were 8lb 5oz & 8lb 11oz @ 38. 3rd 9lb 10oz @ 40+2. 2nd 10lb 12oz @ 40+5. Had GTT with all and no GD. Our 1st was a very average 7lb 7oz @ 39+6 so the odd one out of the bunch. I'm above average height at 5ft 8 but dh is only 5ft 9.

Ds 1 was 8lbs 11 at 40 weeks. Ds 2 was 10lbs at 38 weeks. Both have always been around 98 percentile for length/height. My mums side of the family are all very tall but me and dh are average height.

2 x 9lbers, both early. We both come from families of big babies so think I got away fairly lightly!

Dipsydoodlenoodle · 13/04/2022 22:40

I 5ft 11 and partner 6ft 2 have a baby induced at 39 weeks...baby weighed 6lb 7oz and 50cm...they said she had reduced growth so she was evicted. Shes certainly caught up on her growing and shes one of the tallest babies at baby class now!

Pinkyponkalonk · 13/04/2022 23:58

My daughter was over 10lb and my new niece was nearly 9lb. Neither set of parents is big in any way!

123xanadu · 14/04/2022 00:53

no GD and 10lb4oz at 38+4 🤣

AHungryCaterpillar · 14/04/2022 00:59

I’m not sure,
Mine weren’t earlier but mine were all big 10lbs 4 being the biggest, most women I know had smaller babies so I don’t know about that most babies I know were around 7lbs. Mine was always made out to be unusual

Caspianberg · 14/04/2022 07:06

Statically babies are getting bigger over time. Between 1930-2008, the average birth weight increased by 0.45kg and length by 1.4cm.

But average clothing sizes haven’t. So 50cm is still ‘newborn’. If the average newborn is now more like 51.4cm, that why many only fit in 1month+/ 0-3months sizes from birth
