Duvet and pillow in a cot - is it safe?

My DS currently sleeps with a blanket in his cot, but moves around a lot in the night and always ends up throwing the blanket off.

I was thinking of getting him a toddler duvet and pillow, but is it okay to use these in a cot or is there a suffocation risk at this age? He has just turned two.

What about a gro bag?

dementedpixie · 12/04/2022 17:29

You get cotbed sized duvets or you could try one of those cot quilts. They are ok from age 1

LaingsAcidTab · 12/04/2022 17:31

Grobags all the way for us here when they were that age.

If they aren't used to a grobag then they may not accept it very well at that age

JurasicPerks · 12/04/2022 17:48

Why do you think he will keep a duvet on if he doesn't keep blankets on?
I spent hours pulling blanket or duvets back over DS, who sleeps in just shorts. He kicks them back off in about 30s. I've given up!
But yes, it should be fine.

My 18 month old wears fleece baby grows so she’s warm even after kicking the covers off. She does have a pillow but she’s in my bed rather than the cot. The cot has been ornamental

Mine has had a cot bed duvet and thin pillow in his cot since he was 18 months. He’s nearby 2. He usually sleeps under it, or we re- cover him before we go to sleep.

The cot bed duvet and pillow say from 12+ months on them

We’ve been putting a pillow in the cot with DD since she was about 15 months old, when I was confident she wasn’t going to suffocate herself with it. At first it would just get thrown around but at 20 months now she does seem to be quite used to the idea of resting her head on it throughout the night.

She’s still in a grobag as I didn’t want to introduce a duvet during the winter months (more chance of her waking up cold and I didn’t fancy more traipsing back and forth from her room!) but we’re thinking of introducing it once we get rid of last bit of heating we have on (about 2 hours in the early mornings) - probably next month if the weather continues to improve.

I've just put a pillow and duvet in my 16 month olds cot. It's only been a few nights but he's gone from sleeping sideways, upside down, back to front etc to sleeping with his head on the pillow and his body under the duvet! Incredibly strange 🤣

Daqqe · 12/04/2022 19:23

Of course it’s fine. They easily have the physical ability & awareness to move themselves if they can’t breathe for some reason..

Both my DDs got fed up of sleeping bags by 18 months. They moved to a single duvet & a pillow at that point & into a proper bed for their second birthday! DD1 was & still is such a wriggler, she rarely sleeps under her duvet the whole night but runs really hot & doesn’t seem bothered. She sleeps 7pm-6.30am. Gets up for a wee once or twice (she’s 5).
DD2 was 2 last month. She isn’t so wriggly. She stays under her duvet usually but flips ends of her bed several times a night & doesn’t really use her pillow. Always manages to get the duvet back on & astonishingly never falls out either!

NHS says fine from 12 months

newmum234 · 12/04/2022 19:56

Just to clarify, it's a cot that he's in, NOT a cot bed. I don't see why that should make a difference but just in case.

Not a pillow, cot sized duvet. X

jupitermars1345 · 12/04/2022 20:16

It's fine after 12 months

Skyeheather · 12/04/2022 20:23

Silent Night do a Cot Bed Duvet and pillow set which is suitable from 12 months. It was fine for my DS although he didn't want the pillow until he was three!

dontblamemee · 12/04/2022 20:24

@newmum234 my baby is in a cot with a cot bed pillow and duvet. I just tuck the duvet under the mattress. It's very thin and light. It was a silent night safe nights set.
