Thoughts?
Personally, I don't like it and prefer Jane. A good, solid name with substance. Or am I being boring?

If someone told me they were Jane with an H, I'd be like er where do I put the h? V odd.

Kite22 · 09/04/2022 17:32

So is this a baby you know that has been named recently ?

Goldbar · 09/04/2022 17:38

Jane is simple, lovely and elegant.

Jayne is ok.

Jhayne is... tedious.

Your child doesn't have to have a unique name to be unique.

Uhm, no. Jane is fine.

RampantIvy · 09/04/2022 17:54

Why?

trollopolis · 09/04/2022 17:59

@EV117

Oh and ‘Mairi’ of course…

It’s the same name. It sounds as bog standard as the original spelling when you say it out loud, so why?? If you want to be original pick an actual original sounding name. I don’t get it.

Mhari and Mairi are proper Scottish names
GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 09/04/2022 18:02

@EV117 as pp have mentioned Mairi is not pronounced the same as Mary and it's a beautiful Gaelic name. Hmm

WelshyMaud · 09/04/2022 18:06

I think my pronunciation would automatically be 'Juh-hain'. Constant mispronunciations and being spelled incorrectly, would drive me crazy.

viques · 09/04/2022 18:22

If the h was very important to you for personal reasons then Jehane is a name.

YourWinter · 09/04/2022 18:35

Stupid unusual spellings are awful. The child will spend its whole life having to spell it out (on the phone, for example) because 99.9% of the time it’s spelled the way anyone would expect to spell it.

I was that kid and now in my 60s, I could never understand nor forgive my parents for spelling my nice, ordinary name a stupid way, just to make it “a little bit different”.

Stravaig · 09/04/2022 20:34

Choosing a name that is meaningful to you is understandable.

Thinking through practicalities like ease of spelling, likely nicknames, initials, how it fits with surname, is all sensible.

But trying to be different, unique, special, for its own sake? No. Some perspective and humility please.

Current world population is approx 7.9 billion, according to a quick search online. More than 300,000 babies born today, more than 37 million this year. Here's a screengrab from a world population clock, already out of date by the time you're reading.

No amount of unusual spelling can counteract those numbers!

@GiveMyHeadPeaceffs no offence meant, I didn’t realise - like in my previous post I was being ‘creative’ with my spelling! Although I guess this highlights what could happen! It’s then a completely different name and you don’t even know and look like a bit of plonker for not realising…

It does remind though of when a friend told me her friend had considered naming her child ‘See-oh-ban’. They were just talking, so didn’t know how she planned to spell it. She thought, different but ok - of course written down was actually Siobhan.

Musicandcheese · 09/04/2022 20:56

Jane is a good, plain, sensible name. Like Anne (with an e, obviously), Mary and Susan.

RampantIvy · 09/04/2022 20:59

as pp have mentioned Mairi is not pronounced the same as Mary

How is it pronounced? Mah-ri?

DontBuyANewMumCashmere · 09/04/2022 21:00

@Hoppinggreen

Maybe spell it Gaeyenne?
Makes me think of that 'fish could be spelled ghoti' thing...

Dg as in fridge
Ey and in hey
Kn as in knight

Dgeykn.
Pronounced Jane.

Horridcreature · 09/04/2022 21:08

I would assume it was a different name. I’d ask or if I had to guess jay(as in the letter) hayne

Lesperance · 09/04/2022 21:13

@RampantIvy

Mah ree I think. Like ree in reed rather than ri in riddle.
Stravaig · 09/04/2022 21:27

🎶 Step we gaily on we go ...
... all for Mairi's wedding. (Eng version).

Search for Mairi's Wedding, an old and lovely song, with many versions. Also known as the Lewis Bridal Song. Màiri is the Gaelic.

It's a different name. Like Marie or Maria. Pronounced MAH-ree. Beautiful and very old name.
Thewolvesarerunningagain · 09/04/2022 22:44

Jane (this spelling) is a beautiful, classical name that deserves a come back

I’m doing a re read and I’ve just finished V’s book. I Started Phury’s this morning, which is my least favourite (appart from the Qhinn but).[/quote]
Ugh, that book is the WORST!
There's nothing likeable about Phury or Cormia!

Indeed.

In the context of this thread, definitely a name you wouldn't want to stick a 'decorative' h into, Mhairi is (or can be) different again.
