Beans egg and cheese

Is half a tin of beans, 1 scrambled egg and a small handful of grated cheese a good enough dinner for a 10 month old? Followed by half a banana and a big yogurt

Sounds delicious. I might have egg and beans for dinner myself. Probably 2-3 eggs and a whole tin of beans though.

FWIW 15 year old DS looked in the fridge Earlier and asked why there was half a ton of beans. I told him I'd had half with my dinner the other day
His reply was "who eats half a tin of beans. You're so weird" Hmm

@Im2022

Aw I’m so proud I’m “peak mumsnet” but beans should be an accompaniment to food. You’re not supposed to eat a whole tin of the stuff, it has too many sugars 🤦‍♀️.

But what do I know! I’ll let you get on with it!

Well you clearly don’t know a lot about this, as you’ve demonstrated...

It’s perfectly fine. There is a little bit of sugar in that small portion the baby had. It is well balanced by the nutritional value in beans, and the egg and cheese made up the meal you say it should be an accompaniment to. Banana adds more nutrients and yoghurt, too, is full of protein and very good for the baby. It’s a great meal overall, especially as part of a well balanced and healthy diet which OP clearly understands the principles of.

FloBot7 · 06/04/2022 17:58

Sounds fine and it's ok that he didn't eat it all. He'll let you know if he's hungry.

As a child I was taught to finish everything on my plate. I now find it really difficult to stop eating when I'm full. I'm in a constant battle with my weight. I'm glad parents are moving towards letting children self-regulate.

Err, where's the veg?
Baked beans were vegetables when I last looked!
BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 06/04/2022 18:00

What does dh make him when he preps his meals?

LetHimHaveIt · 06/04/2022 18:09
@Im2022 RTFT. It was half a 200g tin of beans. The OP has clarified that.
In fairness, OP commented quite late in the day that it was half a small tin - to me, half a tim of beans is half a 'standard' 400g tin; so, 200g. Which is a lot for a baby having quite a lot of other food, coming in at 300-odd cals.

What I continue to struggle with, is the dogged insistence by a PP that it's a lot for a 14 year old. It really, really isn't. I can't imagine a 14 year old struggling to eat 200g of beans, on toast, with one egg. If hers does - that's v unusual. I hope she's well-nourished.

Ohtheaudacity · 06/04/2022 18:13

Wow I really didn’t think beans eggs and cheese would cause such a debate. Imagine if I’d thrown a sausage in for good measure.

Nnique · 06/04/2022 18:16

It was half a small tin = 100g ish. Then baby ate half of it. 50g ish. So by my very quick reckoning, IIRC going by Heinz no added sugar baked beans, that’s about 1g of sugar.

Nnique · 06/04/2022 18:17

(If I've got that wrong feel free to correct me, but it still won’t be very much.)

Only on MN
Not in the real world 🤣

It's fine op 😁

ImFree2doasiwant · 06/04/2022 18:22

Fml. He's 10 months old? He'll eat what he'll eat, what dies DH propose?

ColdSeptember · 06/04/2022 18:23

MN is proper mental about food. Unless it's steamed chicken and green veg it's basically child abuse.

OP it's absolutely fine.

MajorCarolDanvers · 06/04/2022 18:39

I once confessed on a parenting forum to feeding my children turkey dinosaurs. Blush

Some thought social services should have been called. Grin

Now of course I only feed my children quinoa and kale that has been grown in my own garden and watered with the tears of nuns. Wink

OddSocksSparklyDocsandDungaree · 06/04/2022 18:43

My daughter could have eaten that at 10 months old. She's now 14 months old and can demolish two jacket potatoes AND a small tin of beans AND a big handful of cheese. It's fine Smile

OddSocksSparklyDocsandDungaree · 06/04/2022 18:45

Missed out the milky bar too. She loves a good milky bar!

Myonlysunshine123 · 06/04/2022 18:51

Sounds fine to me. And to the poster who said their 14 year cant eat half a tin of beans, mine would easily eat beans/sausage on toast, fried egg and cheese because teenagers are unfillable. He comes home and raids the cupboard after school, or gets gets up at 11 this week(half term) and wants a full hot meal, eating biscuits while hes waiting

Snooks1971 · 06/04/2022 18:57

Is it just me, or does anyone else really want an egg, beans & cheese right now? With toast…..

Traumdeuter · 06/04/2022 19:16

A (whole!) tin of beans, with a slice of cheese on toast and a poached egg is my favourite lazy meal. I’d love it if my toddler ate any of that!

It’s a fine meal for a 10 month old, presuming they’re not having it every day. I’m amazed they can eat that much!

NeverDropYourMooncup · 06/04/2022 19:24

@Im2022

Not even my 8 and 14 year old could eat half a tin of beans…and the banana and yoghurt too? And he’s drinking milk? Way too much food.
Pack size: 150G Naturally high in protein and fibre Low in fat Information Ingredients Beans (49%),

So this child has had about 36.75g of beans. And your 14 year old couldn't manage 2 tablespoons of beans and some bean juice?

Have you sought medical advice for your teenager's difficulty in eating?

00100001 · 06/04/2022 19:47

@Im2022

No she can’t eat half a tin of beans aged 14! Half a tin of beans is about over 200g, along with an egg and toast, half a tin is a lot!

And this is half a tin for a 10 month old along with an egg, cheese, banana and yoghurt 🤦‍♀️

But I had my babies a long time ago now, so God knows what people are doing.

I be she could eat 200g of baked beans...
bcc89 · 06/04/2022 19:50

I'm just here laughing about the half a tin of beans being way too much food for an 8 year old AND a 14 year old. God sake.

Firstly you can buy small tins of beans, some of us do.

I also buy a snap pot of beans because theres no wastage

But even if she had been talking about the full tin, a 14 year old who cant eat 200g of beans is hilarious.

bellac11 · 06/04/2022 19:57

A banana has more sugar in it than the beans, even the normal sugar beans but no one is swooning at the thought of a banana

Ohtheaudacity · 06/04/2022 20:01

Update the baby did a huge fart during his bedtime feed. We will be having beans again!

Totally fine as a meal and what I might give to DD14 months. What did your dh think should be changed/added?
