Advised to try 'dairy free' again - any advice for tasty treats for me!!!

I have been advised by paediatrician and dietician to try my Lo on dairy free which given I'm still bf, means I have to also go dairy free. I did this for about 2 weeks when she was younger but found it really difficult and slipped up a few times I'm sure. I need to try it completely this time so I know for sure. Problem is I love, love, love cakes and chocolate (and I dont mean expensive 80% dark chocolate) Anyway, realised milk chocolate if off limits, so any other tasty treats. Dairy free recipes, etc. Also, dinners if possible. God, the things we do!!!!!

Sainsbury's do decent dairy free chocolate.

julen · 07/01/2008 21:17

Our cornershop does Crimble's (Mrs Crimble's..?) cakes and stuff - all dairy free. Also, you can bake quite a few things by replacing milk with water and butter with oil. Muffins especially are easy! You can search on with/without ingredients on www.allrecipes.com as well. Loads of recipes there.

Oh and Lidl do lovely cheap 80% dark chocolate.

I am allergic to milk....seriously allergic too, to the point of hives and wheezing.

am still reeling with shock really, and I was DX in april last year (just after easter too, so all the easter eggs I had were gleefully eaten by mr psycho)!

I am really missing cakes, and TBH, the free-from cakes just don't come close to nice....far too sweet, and an odd after taste too.

and don't get me started on xmas....still sulking!!!! altho I was naughty and scoffed a load of roses one night seeing as I had already reacted by eating some salami and olives, and then finding that I was reacting to the salami as it had bloody milk in it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.....figured if I was reacting I would bloody well enjoy the chocs while I could, and I DID.

regretted it tho the following day as was crippled with tummy pains and was covered in spots too....even tho I was full of anti-histamines. me thinks tho that I am heading for an epipen now tho, as the wheezing with trace amounts is now much worse for my binge, so am kicking myself for my stupidity.....

anyhoo.....back to treats.

tesco value pancakes are milk free, as are value jaffa cakes
party rings
certain rich-tea biscuits
most ginger snap biscuits (I hate ginger, so not a treat for me, but some do like it)
ermmmmm
oooh, if you have a local waterstones, they do a luverrrrrrly slice of organic dairy free, gluten free, carrot cake. I go, buys books, have coffee, buy many carrot cakes, indulge (obviously the coffee is black!

alpro chocolate soya milk is nice......altho on cereal is yack!

the benocal dairy free yoghurty drink thingies are nice (altho are £3.69 for 6!!!), and I use them mixed with granola and blue-berries for brekkie

talking of granola....there are some granola bars about (forget the name right now)....they are good.

sainsburys free from chocolate spread is nice, altho a wee bit after-taste-ish. good on toast/pancakes tho.

erm......hot cross buns/tea cakes......some of them are milk free.

tesco donuts.....also milk free, but only the plain rings or jammy ones. if they are the glazed ones they are not:*.

thinking of more......will be back

oh try alpro chocolate soya drink, its realy lovely

sainsbury's no dairy shortcake is passable...

pinkspottywellies · 07/01/2008 21:28

Montezuma does nice chocolate - orange and geranium is particularly lovely. I can't get it locally but you can get it online and in health food shops.

psychomum5 · 07/01/2008 21:33

chocolate treats......

I like green and blacks 'maya gold'. has an orangey/spicey taste. sounds odd, but really isn't, and I love it. so much better (IMO) than just basic green and blacks. not so ....erm......taste.....erm.....green and blacks just tastes a bit 'strong', and this one doesn't.

my real fave is lindt 'aribaca coffee'. I have only yet found it tho in the shop in southampton hospital, so whenever I have an app. there, or my DS2 does, I stock up. tis £1.39 a bar, but well worth it.

fry cream choc bars are dairy free.....they are plain, mint or orange.

TBH, I find the 'free-from' bars taste a bit powdery, so would much rather go for decent tho strong 'posh' bars. I have tho found that I am not such a cho fiend tho now......have lost the craving from not eating it so often. any urge is satisfied by less now.

HTH more...and will be back again

pevie · 07/01/2008 21:37

Oh thank you. Am going to tesco tomorrow for both the pancakes and doughnuts (oh bliss something sugary and fattening I can have). Will also try local sainsburys. Not too bothered about drinks, except for milk itself which I still love. Am having my last milk drink tonight. If she doesnt improve after this, will be raging, as sleep deprivation AND chocolate deprivation will be too much to bear. Are after eights dairy free (think they say butterfat, take it this is out!!!!) I might need to start eating sweeties again to satisfy sweet tooth ( I do quite like percy pigs from Marks) but will need to hide them from 3 year old!!!!!

psychomum5 · 07/01/2008 21:40

am ranging in anger at after eights people.....used to be the one fab choccy treat that was milk free, and they whacked farkin butterfat into it this year.

mr psycho found me a number to ring them and complain tho, so that is my mission tomorrow (after my waterstones trip and pig-out to celebrate the return to school)

watch out for fireworks in the bournemouth vicinity......mwhahahaha

psychomum5 · 07/01/2008 21:44

and for the milk indulganc e( and believe me, milk is the one drink I love too.....), i manage with the alpro choc soya.

it really really is nice.......I cannot stand soya milk plain as yet (still trying, but is an aquired taste IMO), but this one is luvverly.

apparently they do other flavours, but not yet found them so still on the hunt. probably do, but in health food shops which I haven't looked in yet.

oh, and just so you know.....any and all pate has milk in....found that one out only recently.....so not happy[sob]

FrayedKnot · 07/01/2008 21:44

If you can bake a cake, you can bake a half decent one using "Pure".

And soya milk on cereal is easy to get used to.

FlorenceFarkingNightingale · 07/01/2008 21:54

If you're going to Tesco then also have a look for 'Respect' carrot cake. It's not in the dairy free section - kept with the normal cakes, but it is dairy free, and is very very scrummy.

LilRedWG · 07/01/2008 21:56

Only read the OP so sorry if repeating, but most Bourbon Biscuits are dairy free - DD loves them!

psychomum5 · 07/01/2008 21:58

tabs....you are an angel....never heard of that one but it will be on my next list

psychomum5 · 07/01/2008 21:58

and noooooooooooooooooooooooo....bourbournes are dairy free???????????????

pevie · 07/01/2008 21:58

psychomum5 thanks for that, thought I was going mad as last time I tried dairy free (end of summer) was sure I'd had after eights and they were okay and then had a box from christmas and noticed butterfat!!!!!! What a BUMMER!!!!!! That kept me going last time, Frys creams dont even come close. Although I think the orange, spice maya gold stuff was okay if memory serves right!!!!! Frayedknot, problem is not great on baking front (and also reason for doing this is DD2 NEVER sleeps so v.difficult to find time to bake) but will maybe talk mum into changing some recipes for me. Can you do scones without milk? Sorry frayedknot, I tried soya milk on cereal and it was an abomination!!!!!!!!!!

psychomum5 · 07/01/2008 22:03

OH MY GOD

I cannot believe that I have missed out on these just cos I never read the packet cos I just assumed*.....

pevie · 07/01/2008 22:05

Got dairy free list from dietician today and bourbons are definately on it, so go on psychomum5 go mad!!!! Will definately to to Tesco now to find carrot cake. Also, dont know if everyone already knows this one, but there is definately a dairy free ice cream, cant remember what its called!!! also if you like crisps, M&S honey roast ham has no dairy (lots of flavoured crisps do) and they are so addictive!!!!

OP posts:
FrayedKnot · 07/01/2008 22:06

Ritter Sport (square German chocolate, you can get it in teh UK)

Dairy free ones are:
Plain choc /marzipan
Plain choc /peppermint
Plain choc

The dark choc / hazelnuts one has butter fat in it, so give that one a miss if you react to that.
