Advised to try 'dairy free' again - any advice for tasty treats for me!!!

I have been advised by paediatrician and dietician to try my Lo on dairy free which given I'm still bf, means I have to also go dairy free. I did this for about 2 weeks when she was younger but found it really difficult and slipped up a few times I'm sure. I need to try it completely this time so I know for sure. Problem is I love, love, love cakes and chocolate (and I dont mean expensive 80% dark chocolate) Anyway, realised milk chocolate if off limits, so any other tasty treats. Dairy free recipes, etc. Also, dinners if possible. God, the things we do!!!!!

Pevie, I got the dairy free empire biscuits and danish pastries (the cinammon whirl ones) in Somerfield.

trixymalixy · 09/01/2008 21:21

Why don't you come and chat to other Scottish Mums on the north of the border thread in meetups?

trixymalixy · 10/01/2008 13:03

Right, I have tried some of the dairy free cheese.

The toffuti cheese spread is quite nice, not too different from philadelphia.

I made a BIG mistake and tried some of the cheezly cheddar substitue uncooked and nearly vomited. I nearly didn't try it cooked.

It wasn't too bad as cheese on toast, just a bit hard. i think it'd be Ok on top of lasagne or other baked dishes.

scottish chat thread

Pevie, i have had a bit of a hellish time as well. I have had almost a year of no sleep, breastfeeding was hellish cause DS screamed the whole time and weaning isn't going too well either. So I can offer you some empathy!

Why are you having a hellish time?

PrettyCandles · 15/01/2008 12:34

I just made some cupcakes, and being too lazy to go all the way across the kitchen to the fridge, I used oil instead of butter. Worked perfectly. So you can have your cake and eat it, just replace the butter in the recipe with 3/4 the weight of oil (eg 4oz vutter = 3oz oil).

Prettycandles, my mum who is better baker than me has been replacing marg. with dairy free stuff so have had some nice cake. Also betty crocker or whatever shes called has okay brownies you can make. Still miss mars bars, dairy milk, cheese and crackers, big cream cakes, etc. Only a week in and not sure how long can last. DD seemed quite settled last week for all of two days so was hoping it might make difference then had weekend from hell. To answer your question trixymalixy, we're having hellish time, cos DD2 hasnt really slept since she was born. Best nights she is up twice, worst nights up about 10 times. Never sleeps more than half an hour in day and is always, always tired, often girny, very clingy. Seems in pain sometimes, dr thought reflux, got meds, didnt work, now on dairy free again although not sure thats it either. She is v.constipated at times and has wind from hell. Is bf so wont accept anyone else at night than me. Have tried some form of sleep training twice, first time worked a little then disaster, second time disaster on night one. Want to go back to work p-t but feel totally trapped by this little person. I do love her but has been hardest thing I've had to do. Been through whole motherhood thing before with DD1 which was walk in park compared to this. Anyway, you did ask. Still want me on that scottishmums thread??????? Have enjoyed slightly more lighthearted banter on this thread have to say so am thinking of starting lighthearted thread instead of all this angst I'v ebeen subjecting everyone to!!!!!

Pevie,
Have you been referred to Yorkhill for allergy testing?

My DS was exactly the same, I could have written your story, we were given reflux meds as well and DS would only sleep for half an hour during the day and was very unsettled at night.

It wasn't until I tried him on formula for the first time (think exorcist projectile vomiting!) that the GP referred me.

He is much more settled now I know to avoid dairy and egges. He is still up during the night a couple of times, but does seem to be getting a bit better.

I am going back to work part time at the end of this month. Don't know how i'LL cope, but haven't got any choice as the mortgage has to be paid.

If you are missing cream cakes then you can get a really nice whipped soya cream in Saunsburys and Tescos, it's called cremovita by granovita.

cream

Get yourself a jam doughnut, cut in half, fill with cremovita, eh voila!!

PrettyCandles · 16/01/2008 11:30

You're going to hate me for saying this, but it might be an idea to avoid chocolate, too. If I eat more than a mouthful or two of chocolate, my ds really lets me know. He gets totally unsettled, tummyachey and miserable. I suppose that also means tea, coffee and colas are off as well.

BearMama · 16/01/2008 20:06

I second the poster who said Rice Milk was yummy - I can drink it out the carton and its great as a base for cocoa, smoothies etc. Only thing is its much more expensive than ordinary milk. Asda does one by Kallo at £1.28 a litre - thats about the cheapest.
Best spread is Pure Organic - something about the carrot oil, believe it or not, makes it taste lovely. Again its not cheap - abt £1.50 a tub. Why do I have such expensive tastes????

PrettyCandles · 16/01/2008 21:16

Mmmm, Rice Dream is lovely - especially straight out of the fridge. But too sweet for day-to-day. For general use, cereals etc, I like Oatly. It has a sort of creaminess (without being fatty) that most milk-substitutes lack.

pevie · 26/01/2008 19:56

Sorry been away so long folks, had horrible scare last week where DD2 fell and had suspected head injury. Spent 2 nights in hospital vomiting!!!! Anyway, better now but has become v.unsettled again. I also succumbed and ate dairy!!!!??? (I can hear your gasps now) cos too hard getting dairy free in hospital and was just so worried and p**d off. Only highlight of stay was eating a kitkat and thinking what the hell!!! Problem is when you do that little bits sneak in!!!! So will need to be strict again now. Have just discovered Oatly and that does work better with cereal, also found some pineapple cakes in morrisons that dont have dairy. When you say no chocolate, do you mean even dark chocolate without dairy???? Am I to have no indulgences. Anyway, thanks for tips. Tixymalixy, did they confirm milk allergy with you or did you just go for it anyway. What age is your DD now? We tried the dairy free formula (neutramigen) she wouldnt touch it, so that has scuppered plans to wean off breast a bit!!!!!!! Am scunnered!!!!

God that sounds horrible pevie!! I'm not surprised you needed chocolate!

Dark chocolate without dairy is fine. you can also get soya chocolate bars in sainsburys that are nice.

DS's dairy allergy is confirmed. he was also allergic to nutramigen so we were given neocate, but he won't take it so i am still bfing and now he's 12 months and I'm back at work he has rice milk during the day.

the dietician said to mix nesquik into the formula to get them used to it and gradually reduce the amount of nesquick. DS would take a mixture of neocate and EBM but we never persevered with it really.
